I am curious if there is any stated rhyme or reason to the imperial uniforms and ranking system.
I am aware there are numerous inconsistencies, but wanted to start this as possibly a place of discussion.
First question - what do the uniforms mean?
Olive seems to be naval officers, though I believe General Veers was also wearing olive. White, at least for one guy in the meeting during Episode 4, denotes the Imperial Security Bureau, basically the intelligence division. Black means... what? Is it just the junior officer variant? I was initially curious if it could have denoted marines not in Stormtrooper armor, based on the Tantive IV boarding action and the detention cell, but the Death Star firing control and various bridge officers would seem to invalidate that. (along with the aforementioned General Veers)
Captain Piet had 3 rank columns, Veers had 4 columns, Admiral Ozzel had five columns, which would suggest a general hierarchy...
Do the rank colors mean anything? Is it always Blue and Red? Is gold just decoration or does it denote area of authority?
Have we ever seen an incomplete x by y rank plaque? That is, while I know we've seen 1x6 and 2x3 and 2x5 and so on, have we ever seen 3 rank squares on a 2x2 grid? Or one row of three and a row of one? What about three red squares and a single blue or vice versa?
And so on and so on.
At least the rebel alliance makes sense - looks like sides of a die where higher number denotes higher rank.

hmmmm I've never really thought about it. The grey uniforms (like the ones seen aboard the Star Destroyer in Episode 5) seem to be the lowest ranked. White is reserved for the top officials to the Empire.
