Wisconsin, 1995. 17-year-old Joe Clark kidnapped 13-year-old Thad Phillips and took him to his house. Once there, he began what would be nearly two full days of torture, mostly focused around breaking bones in the boy's legs. In between these punishment sessions, he would make Thad watch TV with him, and behave like they were just two friends hanging out. Thad made a couple of escape attempts, which earned him further punishment. Eventually, Thad battered his way out of a closet he'd been locked in, and called the cops. He told the cops that during the ordeal, Joe had confessed to similar treatment of two previous boys, though Thad could only remember one name, Christian Steiner, who was 14 at the time of his death. Steiner went missing the year previously, and was found dead in a pond. His death was originally ruled to be drowning, but after Joe Clark's arrest the body was exhumed and reexamined. The boy HAD drowned, but only because his legs were severely damaged in a similar manner to the Phillips boy, making it impossible for him to swim when thrown into the pond. Upon Clark's arrest, a list was found of potential future victims, some of whom were marked down with the ominous words "The Leg Thing". Clark was sentenced to 100 years for the kidnap and torture of Thad Phillips (which he claims to have no memory of), and received a life sentence for the murder of Christian Steiner (which he claims to be innocent of). Their is potentially an as-yet-unidentified murder victim (recall that he'd bragged to Thad about doing this to TWO boys previously). A curious note: Clark's trial was delayed while Thad Phillips, who required many surgeries to fix the damage to his legs, recovered from a gunshot wound that he received in an unrelated dispute with yet another youth shortly before he was supposed to testify. This was on an episode of "I Survived..." very creepy. His abductor seemed to enjoy the noises the breaking of the bones made.
