With that box they now show during televised games at home plate and where the ball hits, it seems that they could just have the umpire sitting in a booth watching it and calling balls and strikes over a PA. As for the pitcher getting a new ball every time someone on the side could just toss him one. Same thing for the ones in the field with cameras and instant replay now being part of the game to overturn or confirm close decisions. I can't think of a good reason or justification for keeping these guys out there. Can you?

No. Computers could do it all. Strike zone, who got to the bag first, all of it. And without the histrionics. Umps think they're a part of the game and sadly, they aren't wrong. Their ridiculous antics spice up the game where 90% of the time people are just standing around staring at each other. It's the same reason baseball doesn't enforce stricter rules on fights. In the NBA, forget throwing a punch; if you even leave the bench during a fight it's an automatic game suspension. If a scuffle breaks out in baseball, the entire bullpen crew gets to trot 300 feet to play grabass for a few minutes so the crowd has something to do.
I'd like baseball a lot more if they'd drop the slob umps who make bad calls in order to insert themselves into the narrative. They're the second worst officials in all of sports behind the openly corrupt NBA officials.

They will make egregiously wrong calls and they won't even entertain the notion that they need to confirm with the other umpires, and then they toss you if you deign to question their ethereal wisdom. Pricks, the lot of them.

Pricks, the lot of them. They have too much power and they know it. They can toss you for looking at them wrong. The worst situations are when they follow the player halfway back to the dugout and then throwing them out once they get there. I hate that shit. There should be a system setup like basketball. Get a technical, that's your warning. Get a second T, you're done. It's heated, your blood is up, fine. But know when to shut up. In baseball, the ump is pissed because he didn't get laid last night and he'll just toss your ass in a heartbeat for questioning a call.

Yeah. Then computerized players! Fuck, we could play the whole season on xbox. Save money on uniforms, baseballs, sunflower seeds all that crap.
Or, MLB could make the umps better.

I feel like I just saw recent concept real game footage of this. Umpire was stationed behind home plate as usual, calling out the balls & strikes which the computer was reading.

I think they've experimented with this in the Atlantic League this year.
I'm all for modernizing sports and adapting with the times; however this just feels 'off' to me - i.e. 'Terminator' like where we're going to be replaced with machines/robots/computers.
Leave the umps in - they're part of the game/atmosphere to me.

Happened to Sale the other day.

Yeah. Then computerized players! Fuck, we could play the whole season on xbox. Save money on uniforms, baseballs, sunflower seeds all that crap. Or, MLB could make the umps better. When I watch sports, I watch the players, not the officials. They could put monkeys behind the plate and get similar results to what we have now. A computer won't hold a grudge. A computer won't get tired and just want the game to be over. A computer didn't grow up wanting to be a part of the game, just waiting for the big moment to insert himself into the narrative. The other argument for umpires is the 'human element.' We already have that in players and coaches. Let them decide the game, for better or worse. If a player or coach makes a mistake, there's your human element. The walking representation of the rulebook shouldn't make a mistake that directly effects the outcome of the game (or worse, do it deliberately). If we could have electronic officiating in all sports, I'd take it in a heartbeat. As it stands, baseball is the only sport where I think you could do 100% of the officiating electronically.

No. They should have a live voting system and the people watching and the people at the games should decide what the call should be.

As it stands, baseball is the only sport where I think you could do 100% of the officiating electronically. We're probably being fooled a bit. I've seen pitches where the 2-D image (e.g. K-Zone) shows the ball low, but the 3-D shows it catching the bottom of the plate. The Posey blocking the plate call and runner interference may be tough electronically. The trap/catch sometimes misses the needed angle. Balk calls. Whether a tag up was too soon. Spotting whether a pitcher is doctoring balls. And who determines if a pitched ball has to be removed from the game?

Spotting whether a pitcher is doctoring balls. And who determines if a pitched ball has to be removed from the game? Chips in everything to track movement. Tags, balls, strikes, catches, who got to the bag first. If you want a guy in the booth calling balks, fine. Considering how infrequent that is I don't see a problem with it. If a pitch goes in the dirt, the ball is discarded; it's what happens now. At the very least we need an electronic strike zone, not one made up by each individual ump and varies from pitch to pitch. There's just no reason in 2019 for a fat slob to skulk around behind home plate deciding the outcome of the game.
