Occasionally a picture that has posted successfully will turn into the "little square box" after a few days.

I think it's something called Hotlinking.
I believe it's actually supposed to be a bit of a no no, posting pictures the way we do on here.
Best google it for details, cos I am not sure of the technicalities of it.

More often than not, it's because it was removed from the site on which it was hosted. There is no cure for that, but you can reduce the odds of removal by uploading the picture to an image sharing site and hotlinking it from there.

It's also possible that the website manager noticed an image file suddenly getting a lot more traffic that the rest of the site and simply changed to file name.

Hard to imagine the dull and boring old pictures I post getting too much traffic tho' now, kitten pictures turning into l'il black squares .. sure ! That I could understand. Thanks 4 the in put.
