I saw this way back in the 80's, it was an average slasher that became notorious for it's wild twist ending. It will definitely remind many of Friday the 13th because of its summer camp setting. No doubt, here on the horror board, many of you have already seen it anyway. I rewatched it again the other night, and I probably enjoyed it more this time, seeing it through retro-colored glasses. I love good 80's movies of any genre, and it had been so long that I'd forgotten most of it. The 80's clothes, fashion and slang had me dying...did us guys really wear short-shorts like that, unironically? Speaking of irons, just where did that curling iron wind up, or am I better off not knowing? Then there's all the underlying homosexual subtext, something that flew right over my head then, most of which is right out in the open. This was probably inserted intentionally but carefully, so as not to poke anyone's sensitive areas. There's the previously mentioned short-shorts, but also, all the nude scenes are of only males, the females show nothing. Then there's that wild and crazy twist ending scene, yeah, that probably freaked some people out back in the day! This movie could give A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) a run for it's money, well, almost. The first sequel, Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers (1988), I had seen before and found it boring. Upon rewatching it, I liked it a lot more. Must have been going through my snooty cinema snob phase at the time. I disliked it so much the first time that I passed on the third movie entirely. Now, I'm seeing the third move, Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland (1989), for the first time. Pamela Springsteen is a cutie, no one would suspect her of killing everyone! Does anyone recommend or have thoughts on Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor (1992) or Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008)? Should I attempt to view them?

The first is passable (a generous 6/10) but I found the sequels annoying beyond belief. I don't get the fandom for this series, at all.
I will say, though, "Your ass stinks!" from Return of Sleepaway Camp makes me laugh whenever I think of it (and I've only ever seen it once).

There was no homosexual subtext, society was just less homophobic. White men wore shorts, half shirts, mesh shirts, and often went shirtless. Half shirts were men's fashion, from football, before women wore them. In the mid 80s rap music and urban black culture began dominating young men's fashion, black culture was extremely homophobic, so clothes got bulkier, shorts got longer.
But Sleepaway Camp was a hoot. The first is a genuine good movie on a shoestring budget. The second was okay. The third was super fun with lots of hot girls.

"The Survivor" is basically just a rehash of the franchise in clip form. Very little to no new footage that I've read about.

society was just less homophobic. I think you are looking back at the 1980's with Rose colored glasses in that regard...

Sleepaway Camp was an OK slasher. Yeah that ending was just...wow. Kinda freaked me out.
Never saw any of the sequels.

Tell me more about how woke society is today.

Never seen them. But the episode of How Did This Get Made? covering the original is one of their best episodes. The opening flashback had them confused for a solid fifteen minutes.

A lot of those 80's fashions were later embraced by the gay community, after everyone else moved on. That's why it all stands out so much now, I guess. Heck, I wore some of that stuff. It was not the best decade to be gay though, not just general acceptance of homophobia, but the AIDS epidemic.

It was not the best decade to be gay though, not just general acceptance of homophobia, but the AIDS epidemic. 60s - early 80s fashions. Look at movies from the sixties. Media sensationalizing and exaggerating AIDs terrified people which caused a strong backlash against homosexuals in the mid 80s. A house in our neighborhood was burned in 87 because the owner was gay, got AIDs and people were afraid the house was infected. My close friend was left homeless while his dad was dying in hospital just so rich dudes could sell more papers. This world is a shitty place. But when we wore half shirts and shorts, we weren't paranoid about looking gay, or worried about the gay subtext, or how we might appear on social media, that is a modern culture that is ultra paranoid about both being perceived as gay while trying to give the impression that it wouldn't matter. My best friend and I met when we were toddlers and we have been like brothers since but in the last few years suddenly people make comments as if we must be gay to have been close friends for that long and it makes me sad for the current and future generations that live in a world where friendship and camaraderie are misunderstood and viewed with suspicion.

Well, there's definitely no question that there's plenty of paranoid and prejudiced people in this age, just look at who got elected president. I still like to hope that there are more good than bad out there, but these times do make you wonder.

Anyway, sorry I derailed the thread. I recently rewatched Sleepaway Camp, hadn't seen it since the early 90s, and enjoy it more now than I did then.

I mean I wasn't coming after you or trying to start an arguement. I just disagreed with you. Anyway I still haven't watched part 4. I hear it's just not as good. Despite some of the original stars returning. There have been rumors or a reboot of the first film for a long time now. I'll believe it when I see it.

IIRC, part 4 started as a fan project made from cut scenes but I haven't seen it.

I'm happy to report, after now completing the entire series, that Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008) is a return to the style of the original movie. It has the original writer/director, and three of the original cast are back too...although they are probably the worst actors in this. Saw the twist coming from a mile away but it was at least enjoyable getting there.

Saw this (original Sleepaway Camp) back in the day and remembered it fondly. Noticed it is on Amazon Prime and since it's a rainy Sunday decided to give it a rewatch. What a stink pile! Cinematography, fx, and acting are so bad. I also didn't remember how obvious it was who the killer is the first time. I know I saw one of the sequels (either II or III) and haven't really been interested in seeing the rest. Outside the big reveal ending I don't think there is anything memorable about it. Though I do have to give it credit for killing all those little kids in their sleeping bags around the campfire in one scene. Most horror won't show little kids as victims of serial killers.

I watched it a few years ago on Youtube. Maybe not the best format but I had heard about this film and wanted to check it out for myself.
It's a terrible film overall with some terrible acting. I don't know for sure if that is done on purpose, like a satire, or if they are trying to do their best? I don't know. The outcome is the same.
It kept my interest barely enough to keep watching.
The ending is an all time shocker. I have to admit that final scene is incredibly disturbing and I did not see it coming.
I kinda guessed who the murderer was and I was right but that's not the real surprise.

Sequel Angela is one of my favorite killers, especially in part 3. The way she's so chipper and optimistic but expresses her frequent disappointment by unceremoniously killing the offender. But nothing gets her down for long and she's back to her happy place.
We watched F13 p.2 yesterday and were debating whether Angela would see Jason as a bad camper and dispatch him quickly or if they would be kindred souls cleansing campgrounds everywhere of misbehaving counselors.

I didn’t see it as homophobic at all. Just had an interesting little twist that sparked with many viewers.
Anyway, I liked the first 3. Return kinda sucked though. And I refuse to watch The Survivor.
