As expected from a Zack Snyder film, his adaptation of Watchmen is pretty divisive. On the one hand, some people think it’s a good adaptation that pays respect to the source material, but on the other hand, there are people who believe it misses the point of the comics because of how “cool” it presents things as being. It seems like there isn’t really a definitive consensus on the film.
Personally, I’m somewhere in the middle on it. I can see where both sides are coming from, but I don’t think it’s either a stunning recreation of the comics, or a complete bastardization.

I just thought the movie was pretty drawn out and boring: I haven't read the comic back then.

Personally, I love it. Probably my second favorite superhero movie of all time.

I really enjoyed it. I'd never heard of the comic before the movie, I read the comic after seeing the movie and thought the movie was better. Using Manhattan's powers for the disaster was far more sensible than alien psycho-squid. I always thought the section where we see Manhattan's origin story makes a great short film all by itself.
Overall I'd give it an 8 or 9.

Way better than (low) expectations. I was a reader of the comic when it first came out and it remains one of my favourites, but whilst it may have taken a few liberties with the source, it is still better than any on screen translation I could have imagined.

I own it on dvd and absolutely love it. But I can understand how it'd turn off some folks (very violent & very long run time) but I thought it was really well done. For all the shit Snyder gets for his BvS misfire, he directed the shit out of Watchmen and did a very good job imo.
8.5/10

Haven’t read the novel, but the movie is really good, IMO.

Great. I think I like it more than any MCU, DCEU or X-Men movie but I might need a rewatch.

It's not a terrible film, but it completely misses the point of the comic. Snyder is always more style than substance.

I don't feel anything is unfilmable. But Snyder's tone and aesthetic certainly clashed with the themes and atmosphere of the story.

It's in the middle for me...
My biggest problem is that they changed the ending, which ultimately makes Ozy's plan NOT work like it does in the comics. So it's all going to fall apart in the near future anyway regardless of Rorschach's journal.

While it was visually striking, the movie felt long and tiresome to me, but I did enjoy the characters. That said, I never read the graphic novel, but I give it a 7/10.

If not with the movie itself, if not with Snyder's own words, you can plainly see why Snyder was wrong for the job with his later takes on Batman and Superman. He *loves* his heroes violent and nihilistic. No matter how slavish an adaptation this is, his fetishised style completely betrays the material. Hell, our old pal Trisrian thought it was supposed to be an inspirational tale about coming out of retirement...fucking Watchmen.
I'd rather a movie have the same tone than blindly recreate every single comic panel. That's ignoring the laughable music choices, SNL quality makeup, and occasionally bad acting.

I’m just bumping up this thread to say this: after seeing the outrage at the HBO show, I’m definitely starting to lean towards the belief that Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen did more harm than good. He seemed to have inspired an entire fandom of people who don’t get that Rorschach isn’t supposed to be admired.

The first half of the Ultimate Cut is awesome. The second half sucks. Not sure how, considering the ending of the graphic novel works just fine, but I feel like he just couldn’t keep up with himself.

Who doesnt like a tough detective with a cool mask The whole point of Rorschach in the comics was that he was this sad, ugly, smelly, misogynistic, homophobic, socially inept, hypocritical far right extremist. Rorschach was specifically meant to be a deconstruction not just of masked vigilantes, but of the objectivist beliefs of Steve Ditko, who happened to be the creator of the character Rorschach was inspired by. Considering that Alan Moore is extremely left leaning, you can take a wild guess of what he thinks regarding Objectivism. Moore has even said that he does not understand why certain people identify with Rorschach. That’s not to say that Rorschach isn’t an interesting character, but he was most certainly never meant to come across as cool. Zack Snyder unfortunately seemed to miss the memo, since he basically made Rorschach into an R-rated Batman, complete with a growly voice.

I guess people identify with him because he's damaged, flawed. My best guess
