Watched this last night.
A low budget, very slow burn, supernatural mystery.
Set on an isolated Hebridean Island in 1856... Three shipwreck survivors wash up on it... I'll leave it there for anyone interested to discover the story further for themselfs.
Lovely atmosphere, the island itself is a character. Mostly well acted, the accents get a bit shonky at times though.
Some of the effects are a bit ropey, but that's forgiveable being a low budget film.
Nice soundtrack.
Has a dreamlike quality to it.
The story unfolds very slowly, the pacing worked really well for me.
Not everyones cup of tea I expect, but I really enjoyed it.
GET IT WATCHED!
8/10

Where/how did you see it? DVD. Cool. Looks like it's on Showtime so I'll scope it out in the next couple of days.

Bumping this up. This little known film deserves a bit more attention 👍 This is a weird one. I'm not fully on board, but I respect it. Its American trailer is very misleading and tries to sell it as a trippy intense horror movie, but it's definitely more in the style of desolate period drama. It takes a very long time to reveal what it's hiding from the audience, but the atmosphere is appropriately foreboding. It threw me a bit, because I was expecting more of an abstract nightmare, but the bulk of the movie is pretty straightforward story telling with some weird sequences thrown in at key times. I also was surprised as I was following along that there was less desolation than I thought. It doesn't seem like it at first, but there's a little society on this isle and the relationships among them and the issues they deal with and hide from the protagonists are some of the more engaging parts of the story. When it gets to the creepy parts it works pretty well, but I do think the clearly low budget is apparent at times. My guess (without really looking it up) is that the filmmaker is new-ish to this and has promise but not a great deal of experience. There are some really nice shots, but some of the scenes could do with a little trim, some of the performances could have been better guided, and some of the shot selections and editing choices could have been tighter and more polished. Maybe that's a little harsh, but it's only really worth mentioning because so much of it works really well that nitpicking is warranted when it's not great. I will say that there are some great shots here too, and some are due to choices of what/where to focus, racking that focus, and some great framing decisions... But a lot of the look of the movie is just having a terrific location. Have you seen any of the films of Lawrie Brewster? He's also a Scottish filmmaker who's made a few very strange, very desolate, very melancholic, very lonesome, very abstract, very small horror films that show potential but that leave a lot more to desired. They're weirder and more amateurish than this by far, and I doubt many people at all have ever heard of them, but they share a certain DNA, in a way. Might be worth checking out if this one spoke to you.
