What are the requirements or conditions for something to be considered sinful? Is something a sin because it goes against the teachings of a religion? Is it a sin because it offends or angers God? Is it only sinful if it hurts someone else or if it is illegal? My definition of a sin would be anything that directly goes against God's nature and violates His standards. It may be illegal and harmful or it may seem like it doesn't hurt anyone, but if it goes against who God is, then I would consider it a sin. What are your thoughts on sin?

If Erjen and Blade are are afraid to admit they like it, then it's a sin.

MoviefanThey are generally spelled out. Further, while the most basic standards may be found in the original texts, various denominations can add whatever else they wish to that their followers are willing to accept. Yes However, sinful acts are based on the doctrine of the believer. It is entirely inconsequential whether the unrighteous person disobeys God's standards unless it intrudes on the faithful. I'd say the only way "sin" makes sense is in the context of religion, so it would be whatever theoretically offends/angers God. Beyond that I think we only speak of sin metaphorically, as in moral wrongs.

If we use that definition of sin, then a requirement for sin to exist would be that God exists. I don't believe that, therefore I don't believe in sin. I guess that maybe in a pluralistic and secular society we should let go of "sin", and focus on what's moral. Morality exists independently of whether deities exist or not. Therefore, in my opinion, it's more useful for societies to decide what's moral or immoral, then what's a sin.

The Greek word for sin is hamartia. It literally means "to miss the mark." So a sin is anything that misses the mark of God's ideal.

"Sin lies only in hurting other people unnecessarily. All other sins are invented nonsense."

I'm a Christian, so I do look to the bible for guidance. But, I do know right from wrong, and I innately know when I've committed a sin. I know that I have committed a sin, if I have acted from bad motive; if, for example, I have done or said something that I know will be hurtful to another and I know I did not do it for their own good

There are so behaviors God considers a sin. We would never be able to comply with all of his rules. Just memorize the Ten Commandments and repent.

I suppose I would say that a sin is something that offends god, that goes against god's wishes. Since I don't believe in god, I don't view anything as a sin. Rather, I just talk about things being morally or ethically wrong.

Just memorize the Ten Commandments and repent. So do we go with the ten commandments the first time God gave them to Moses...or the second time? After Moses broke the first set of tablets, God said, "Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke." Of course, God being the forgetful guy that he is, created a new set of rules, like this little gem... “The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”You would think that the creator of the universe could remember his own rules.
