Sin is a label put on actions that are perceived negatively by a culture.
Depending on the culture different things could be considered sin.
For example, in our culture eating other humans is a sin but it would not be considered a sin in a society of cannibals, it would just be considered having lunch.

Not just by culture or even primarily by culture, but oftentimes something elevated above any particular culture which is why it gets so many riled up. Sin has never been about equating to cultural norms since cultural norms are always lower than the sin standard and the gap widens with each passing century.
After all, there's never been a time in the history of man that sex wasn't awesome, people didn;t kill on the basis of things far less significant than a belief, lying to avoid a truth wasn't common, & trying to keep up with the Jones' didn't jumpstart our competitive urges.
Sin within a belief system is simply saying that no matter how whacky people are around you, you should be better or you should be like them and get out our religion.

johnblutarsky Are you quizzing me or are you wanting to be educated? 1. Yes. He actually received the 10 Commandments prior to this but they were written down on the mountain 2. Yes, although he already knew what they were doing 3 & 4. Yes, God told him to come back up the mmountain so he could rewrite the commandments on tablets Moses made 5. No, they are identical. Nothing changed. There's nothing to compare. In the end, it doesn't matter because I don't believe the nonsense in much of the Bible (including Exodus) actually happened anyway. There are a different set of commandments listed, but the Bible is so horribly written that it doesn't take much to interrupt the information 30,000 different ways. You would think that God would have chosen better authors to record his information. There should not be any ambiguity or misunderstandings within the Bible, but...

An immoral act against divine law. I guess the real problem is determining what exactly the divine laws are.

For instance at least things that are illegal universally, like stealing, killing, etc. Although plenty are circumstantial as well so it is not exactly black and white.
