It's about three teenagers spending the summer at the beach out while folks are away and how a fourth, shy, sensitive awkward girl comes into their fold. I only know bits and pieces of what happens and there's not much at all up on Youtube. I don't even know if it's in print anymore. Rex Reed and several others said that Catherine Burns, who played the shy outcast, was excellent.
I would love to see it some time.

good coming-of-ager, back when I saw it on tv years ago, Barbara Hershey being the stand out. There were a few of that type around the same time, summer of '42 (1971) was a hit, while Catherine Burns and Richard Thomas (John Boy Walton) returned in the lesser red sky at morning (1971).

It's a cautionary coming of age film about a shy girl(Rhoda played by Catherine Burns) trying to fit in with a more worldly group. There were signs that the group could be a bunch of jerks. Like when they had dinner with a Hispanic man named Annibal (Hannibal) but the group was condescending when they keep calling him Annabelle. It all leads to tragedy for Rhoda. The STARZ-ENCORE channel used to show it in the early 2000s, along with other coming of age movies from the late '60s. "The Sterile Cuckoo", "The First Time", "Three" all coming of age movies but unlike the John Hughes films they were not fast paced upbeat films about teeny boppers. They were slower pace, low keyed and were about young adults (college age) and reality hit them right in their faces like a Mike Tyson right.
