No, I'm not talking about all of those appauling sins that you've committed. Though you should be ashamed of yourself!
...I'm talking about that oppressive summer heat.
My apartment is roasting hot at night... And I mean ROASTING HOT. Sometimes I think I am literally melting in there. And no I don't run a fan because I just can't sleep with one of those on me for some reason. And opening the window only makes the bus that goes by at 2am that much louder. Man, I wish I had A/C.
Summer nights are the worst. Innit?

My mom is cold-blooded, Queen of the Reptiles. Even in the dead of Winter, Mom will have the CA turned to around 58 degrees. Fahrenhet. And at least, if not four, box fans blowing all over bedroom. My dad, sister and myself haad to put on our winter coats, with gloves and mufflers and gloves ion order to not get overly cold. But the bottomline is that whenever you entered Mom's bedroom, and got to sseall that steamed breath, you saw your hot breath. It was unervving. It was the way things were...

I have central air. I set the thermostat on a certain temp at night to keep my apartment cool, but not to the point where it will continuously run, even if electricity's cheaper during off-peak hours.
I typically sleep in my boxer briefs with a blanket covering the upper part of my body. I keep my legs, ankles, and feet exposed. I also run my air purifier because of allergies and happen to like the soothing sound. It helps drain out the background noise when the neighbors decide to blast their car stereos at 3 A.M.
And, wow, you don't have air? At all? Not even so much as a window unit? I would move if it was a rental. Nobody should have to live without being able to cool themselves off. People have died because of these God-awful heatwaves.

Damn, I feel for you during those really hot stretches as our A/C was out not all that long ago and it seems once it gets around mid-80's (or higher) with high humidity it really starts to suck as you almost start feeling a bit sick, especially if you don't have a steady solid breeze on you. plus, not to mention I get really irritated if I am just sitting there sweating as A/C is a must have once the heat goes beyond a certain point. I generally like summer over winter, but this assumes one has A/C in the summer. but in your case it might be the other way around given that extreme heat can be potentially bad for ones health. if I were you, I would seriously look into one of those window mounted A/C units (since they are much cheaper than proper A/C which is central air(central air is best as they work great but are not cheap(i.e. around $3-4k))) as they will make a world of difference and are reasonably priced. because our grandma has one and her square footage is more than what the A/C unit is rated for, which will basically run all of the time it's on because of that (since it can only lower the room temp so much), but it makes a CLEAR difference to where you will be easily satisfied with it since it gets rid of the humidity and the room temp is reasonable (I suspect her house is smaller than many though so assuming your house is bigger it will probably not work as well. but if it's even close, it will be easily worth it just to get rid of that hardcore heat to get the room to a reasonable temp). it's basically a reasonably priced item that will make a big difference as when your damn near struggling to breathe it will definitely get rid of that level of heat. I am on the opposite as I sleep better with one of those industrial grade fans (which are louder than the typical fan) which help drown out background noise etc. but that's generally only when I sleep as when I am up around say watching TV, ill have a smaller fan going because it gives me a slight breeze and is not loud enough to screw with the TV much where as the industrial grade fan (20") would make it so hearing the TV clearly would be a issue. but in your case, when it's humid... you ain't got much of a choice whether you like the fan or not as with no solid breeze on you, high humidity is just THAT much worse to where it's intolerable as with a fan blowing a solid breeze on you, it makes a noticeable difference. but as soon as you get out of that breeze, not much beyond that things start to really suck again. or other idea, assuming A/C is out of the question... you can use a decent fan to pull in outside air pretty well as I do it from time-to-time with a decent powered fan, in a room, pointing out the doorway of that room with that rooms window open and after a hour or two it makes a noticeable difference especially if the outside temps are noticeably cooler than inside. this could be a potential option for you to do before you go to sleep etc. it's not perfect but it's a decent option in some situations. dirtypillows58f Seriously!? if so, that sounds like she's got some issues (no offense to you) as no one can possibly like a room 58f as that's not a comfortable room temp (then to add more nails-in-the-coffin she's using multiple fans!?!?) as even someone who likes room temps on the cooler side should be AT LEAST high 60's (say a bare minimum of 65f+ (personally I would not go lower than 68f as a general rule, summer or winter. hell, we usually keep the general house set at 74-75f as it's a nice balance of keeping things cool but efficient. but just in general I would imagine most people would find a comfortable room temp to be between 68-72f) as that high 50's is simply like Antarctica as it's way to cold. so while I realize people do some strange things... that's got to be up there when it comes to general room temp stuff as I would imagine the vast majority of people would want a room temp if high 60's to low 70's as much either way of that starts to get too cold or too hot. p.s. those box fans suck, I would invest in a better quality fan (say $30 or so as if you go much under this you will get junk.) as they blow a better breeze even on the low setting and they are less noisy to as those box fans you generally have to run on a higher speed setting just to get a passable breeze out of them. I generally don't use more than low setting on my fans because they move decent air. NOTE: when our A/C died for about a month not long ago (it's good now) I had to use medium to keep afloat. but in general when A/C is going I use low setting.

Sounds like your mom is going through menopause, those hot flashes can be terrible, when I went through it, I had my windows open in January in Chicago and was sweating profusely!!!! After I got on hormones, the hot flashes disappeared.
