Whenever the topic of family members being in denial island raised (usually in the context of a thread entitled "True crime pet peeves" or something), the same names come up. Diane Schuler, Morgan Ingram's mom Toni, Noreen Gosch, etc. Given that there's a lot less information on cold cases from years ago (Noreen being the obvious exception since she really helped increase public awareness of missing children, starting with her own son), we often don't hear the same things about relatives of victims in such cases. One such case that has always stood out to me was the 1975 disappearance of Rogelio Cerda in Texas, which looks to me like a tragic but routine accidental drowning at the beach.

Rogelio's younger sister Cindy (then 11) started a blog called Missing Since 1975. She has since made the blog private and I can't even Wayback Machine it anymore. I'll put the link below if anyone can try to do anything with it. Anyway, Cindy seems to think that Rogelio left of his own volition and that the friends he was with, namely his girlfriend Betty, helped him disappear. He didn't drown because he was a good swimmer (how many times have we heard that?) and is most likely still alive with amnesia. Most of the blog is written as if she's talking to her brother and is kind of disjointed. In one such entry, she take (what seems to me like) a jab at Betty when she says:
"You stood in a debut [I'm guessing a quinceañera] in May of 1975 (and Betty allowed you to stand with her?-it's no wonder, though, since she married the guy I saw her with, David Ramos, just as soon as you disappeared, in his white car at Woodlawn park and she is now Betty J. Ramos) and it was one that I will never forget. "
I was able to ascertain the Betty and David did in fact marry...in 1978. Hardly "just as soon as Rogelio disappeared". If I were either one of them and I came across that, I wouldn't appreciate it. Not to mention, is it really Cindy or her family's business who Betty went with after the disappearance? Apart from the allegedly sightings, Cindy seems to cite Betty's having moved on as proof that she helped Rogelio vanish.
I have the utmost sympathy for the Cerda family, but I really think Cindy is seeing what she wants to to see because she can't accept that the big brother she idolized is in fact dead.
Sorry that was so long, but that one always stood out to me. Any other similar old cases like this. One of the reasons I like this subreddit so much is that we can talk about stuff like this involving victims' families respectfully and without being branded a bully for doing so.
Here's the link to the blog if anyone can find a way to open it to before it got privatized.
