Sure George Carlin did say someone with the name Bono must be a pretentious motherfucker.
Their activist image has worked against them.
But the first 6 or 7 albums are amazing. It's at least great pop music. Bono is a great vocalist.

Personally I am bored to tears with the negativity and vitriol that some folk feel the need to vent over the band or Bono in particular.
He is in my opinion (based on many interviews and articles he's written) an articulate and intelligent man, not preachy, who recognises the dichotomy of fame and philanthropy ....but uses his platform to try to do something anyway, cause-wise despite the vocal naysayers.
The other 'criticism' or observation we sometimes see that 'ooh they're not as good/relevant as they was' is stultifyingly stupid. What band/artist is after 40 years? Personally I love a huge bunch of their music... AND... ...I saw them a couple of years ago at the 02 ....and they were awesome, a blistering, sublimely entertaining night.
If one doesn't like their music....then fair do's ....as any well-rounded normal person knows....all art is subjective....but the bad comments they seem to receive (often i think from folk who who don't compose, perform or do anything for others) is in my opinion unwarranted and bloody tedious.

I think their best album is Achtung Baby.
I also think that a lot of the hate comes from a certain cool factor. Many people just love saying that they hate them in the same way people love broadcasting their hatred for Creed in an attempt to get cool points.

What's to hate?
Forty years of great music?
How many bands have that record?

U2 or "I'm holier than thou"-Bono?
I hate only the latter.

What's to hate? Forty years of great music? How many bands have that record? Less than 15 years of great music actually.

I care little for their 21st century output. Everything up to Achtung is excellent.

U2 or "I'm holier than thou"-Bono? I hate only the latter. Some examples of holier than thou to warrant the hate would be interesting.

I think their best album is Achtung Baby. I also think that a lot of the hate comes from a certain cool factor. Many people just love saying that they hate them in the same way people love broadcasting their hatred for Creed in an attempt to get cool points. Or Batman and Robin and Ishtar. Those movies are nowhere near as bad as they lead you to believe they are.

I like them up to ATYCLB. The Elevation tour was fantastic. After that they’re hit or miss for me, mostly miss.
As for Batman & Robin, that movie earned anything negative said about it. It was an embarrassment of a movie. Haven’t seen Ishtar so no comment on that one.

I like 6 or 7 songs. Sunday Bloody Sunday is great. Mostly sound the same, though.
Also saw U2: Rattle & Hum in IMax 3D. Lost its novelty 15 minutes in.

Why is that extremely popular band that has sold millions of albums hated so much?
Not everybody is going to like every band for various reasons. Every successful band has haters.

There's a forced earnestness about Bono which is off putting...Musically, while not all that engaging, they are proficient...The two albums in the 90s where they expand their sound and lampoon their image are more interesting, but that was a short experiment...(Achtung and Zooropa)

Because they put their album on my Ipod without my permission. Beat me to it. I decide what's on my Ipod.

Below an apology from the hateful, nasty man for giving free music away.
The Independent Tech
U2 frontman Bono has apologised for the band’s decision to release their latest album free over iTunes, admitting that he and his fellow musicians “might have got carried away with ourselves.”
“Artists are prone to that kind of thing,” said the Irish rocker as part of a video interview with fans conducted via Facebook.
Looking a tad remorseful, he explained that, “A drop of megalomania, a twitch of generosity, a dash of self promotion – and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years mightn’t be heard,” had led to the decision.
“Lotta noise out there. I guess we got a little noisey ourselves to get through it.”
The decision to release Songs of Innocence for free to iTunes users, causing the album to appear in iPhones and iPads across the globe, sparked an instant backlash, with critics saying both U2 and Apple were out of touch with what their customers actually liked to listen to.
Despite this, Apple claims that more than 81 million people “experienced” the album (we assume they mean listened to parts) with 26 million individuals choosing to download the entire thing.
However, the company didn’t release any figures regarding how many people used their special “U2 removal tool” – a one-click solution to permanently remove the album.

I don't "hate" them, but I do vastly prefer their early post-punk stuff as opposed to their later unremarkable arena rock. "I Will Follow" is a great single even if it is a blatant PiL ripoff.
