I remember your thread on that subject in the Music General forum of that other site. I still have my contribution saved in a text file on my computer. Blimey......the old boards of 'that other site' . Where you alpha there? .....and I do remember waffling about my anti-deity views on various forums. I'd be intrigued to know what I put on that probably wine-sodden post. Yes, I was alpha128 there. Same user name, same avatar. As I recall, the thread was entitled "Anti-religion/Atheist Songs" and you posted a list of songs. I can't remember if you included YouTube links or not. I posted a list, with YouTube links, of about twenty-five songs.

. Nice funky groove-along tempo......but two and a half minutes is long enough for the band to wanna get kick-a$$ and Earnest with Ernie Isley launching into one of the most longest and blistering guitar solos in history. Absolutely brilliant .

Among the many songs out there that mix and match musical styles, this has one of my favorite transitions.

Some heavy examples of radical transitions, though some might come back around ...
'Prelude - Nothin To Hide' - Spirit
'Sex Machine' - Sly And The Family Stone
'Moby Dick' - Led Zeppelin
'Supernaut' - Black Sabbath

.
This is a slightly odd one. Assassins 0f Allah (Hassan Sahba) by Hawkwind is one of their numbers that has grew a lot of nice 'live' hair over the years ...a staple fan-fave crowd pleaser ( Like Metric's Rock Me Now, Faithless's We Come One, Cure's A Forest etc ).
This number often started with the riff rock passages.....and then morphs into the mystical meanderings......wheras this version ( one of my faves) starts with the trippy then builds/flips about 5 minutes in . Anyways....I love it....what say you gentle reader?

Sudden shifts in construction, major riff changes, different tune at some point of the song... Maybe you're a progressive rock fan and just don't know it yet.

From the list of artists that Google throws up on a 'prog rock bands' search I suppose the only ones I've listened to at any length are Pink Floyd (not what I'd call prog rock, like, say, Yes who I understand to be high purveyors of it) and Supertramp (are they prog rock?) There's loads of bands on their list, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream, Jethro Tull, Muse, 10CC, Uriah Heep, Camel, Barclay James Harvest, King Crimson, The Nice, ELO, ELP, Marillion, Soft Machine, Rush and others. Apart from Muse, which is my girlfriend's fave band, I've listened only to a smattering of those listed above and to nothing by one or two of them. I can't get into Muse at all, not what I'd call prog rock, more sort of meandering for meandering's sake, although some of their tunes I rather liked when they were suggested to me. They are playing on September 14th in London and the crowds will be huge. She's going to the concert but I am not. I will accompany her to the O2 and wait in the pub for the 3 or 4 hours and meet her afterwards, but you couldn't pay me to go see Muse. I went to the 'Drones' film at the cinema and it was not for me at all. If that's prog rock today, keep it. But, hey, each to our own. I did ages ago buy the album 'Breakfast In America', because I liked the sensational sound of 'Goodbye Stranger'. There is a super track on the album called 'Child of Vision' which may fall into the prog rock category, I don't know. It has a nice unexpected chorus and then a quite long instrumental passage, very good.

I have nothing against pop music - I actually like a lot of it, but I find most of it...unsatisfying. With progressive music, it's more of a journey than just a cool song. Keeping with the movie analogy, it's like just watching the highlight scenes; you don't get the same impact without the context, which is provided by the "boring" parts that a lot of people seem to want to tune out. If someone has never seen Star Wars, for example, just showing them the scene in which Darth Vader reveals himself to be Luke's father would mean nothing and therefore fall flat. Even though it's a cool scene in and of itself, without everything leading up to that, that's all it is. And so it goes with music - for me, at least. A good example would be Dark Side of the Moon (the entire album, start to finish, not just Time and Money - which are actually part of a larger whole). Dogs from Animals fits the bill, too. There's a reason PF's box set is called "Immersion." If you're looking for something new, get comfy, put some headphones on, put on Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree, close your eyes and let it do its thing. Immerse yourself. ps. Of your list, give me King Crimson and Rush. You can keep the rest. I really want to like Muse, but other than a few select tracks, I just can't. Especially their latest couple of albums. Yuck. But I love Supertramp.

. PULL THE DAMN THiNG DOWN ~ John Miles
John Miles and his anti-paean to progress re: pain of pulling down pretty buildings ....goes nicely for 5 minutes....then gets pulled aside as some jam is spread.

UB4O's moody, misty lambast against social injustice is after 4 minutes topped off and turned over by the absolute cream of a dubby diversification. I just want it to go on forever.....tell me if you concur. Also, please find attached as a special Bladey Bonus.....a kicking 'live' version.
