I remember back in the day logging onto IMDb was the first thing I did when I got into work. A place where I can talk about.... Well, just about anything really, but TV and movies?! That 's like my version of going to a coffeehouse and talking politics. Nowadays, you post something and either you get little response, constant jokes (with no attempt at actual conversation), or a just arguing/insults.I am not saying it's this place either. IMDb became pretty useless it's last few years.

People are inundated in propaganda. I can't even have conversations with friends and family anymore because they interject politics and spew propaganda like machines. My FIL was telling a story about a horse drawn sleigh in the 50s and suddenly balled his fists and said, "damn ACLU!," shakes and then continues his story. He randomly blurts out stuff like that. Old friends spray propaganda like an out of control fire hose and then become angry and defensive if I don't agree. Everything from tv news, commercials, advertising of all sorts, TV shows, movies, blogs, podcasts, social media accounts... So much of it is designed to program how you think. I'm starting to really understand movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

SargeGiven that kind of comment I would have to assume these friends of yours are teenagers, or 20 somethings at the oldest? ; because if someone who's not in that age bracket is still talking like that, they got issues.

I think 24 hour news services started this in the 1980's, but internet "news" has further eroded people's sense of humanity and the respect for differences of ideas. I personally enjoy hearing about people's takes on various films even if I don't agree with them but then again I have a "humanities" degree (History) and have always been open to different positions on things. Heck, I don't know how it even happened given that both my Dad and Uncle were brought up by my grandparents, but one is just a half step away from card carrying communist and the other is a die-hard Republican.... haha. Those dinner table conversations are always interesting. They always seem to stay civil though (usually).

Young people would make this same comment but substitute "Boomer" for "teenagers." No one wants to believe their opinions belong to someone else but that's what is happening across age groups. And each "side" becomes more polarized in reaction to the other side. Ten + years ago I started eliminating as much advertising from my life as possible, I even mute the radio during commercials. Rarely watch TV news and never consume any article unless I can check sources. I never buy anything unless I planned to buy it before seeing the ad. Makes for an interesting viewpoint.

Such people prefer that venting or the power trip of hurting others more than connecting, it seems quite sad actually. maybe one day it will change again?

"Us" vs "them" outlook on just about everything which is made worse by the politics that has everyone on edge.
General lack of common courtesy on-line and off.
The idea that being rude and crude is the same as being funny.
Anonymity and no repercussions for ill mannered behavior.
The view that being nice is the same as being weak.
The ability to take what you want to say to your boss out on total strangers.
any or all of the above ?

I used to really love it when I could engage in long detailed discussions back on IMDB but they kept getting fewer and far between. I've come to find over the years that the internet is a haven of extreme opinions and most are looking for validation rather than conversation. I think too many end up getting scared off by that leaving us few looking for scraps.

some of the best conversations develop in rather secluded places out of the rush and bustle of a busy board. They may be officially "off topic" for the particular location but they can develop nd meander wherever they wind up going.

I have never been a part of any forum or chat room that didn't have an argument spring up eventually. You can take the most niche subject in some broken forum with 400 users and you will still see arguments over something stupid. When people get a free reign to express their opinions on something a nasty thing seems to awaken inside them.

If I remember correctly, people were willing to volunteer or even pay to be moderators. IMDb declined and stated one of the reasons were costs to run servers for the boards. When users came forward to pay for that as well, IMDb kept whipping up one B.S. excuse after another.
I don't see why it couldn't have been part of their Pro membership. Nobody's going to pay X amount of dollars monthly or yearly so they can simply go around trolling. That probably would have solved people creating sock accounts and whatever other problems they were having at the time.
