I frequently hear people say "simular" instead of "similar."
And some people who should know better still say "nucular" in place of "nuclear." The "nucular/nuclear" one irritates me the most! My 'grammar police' tendencies are going to increase - fair warning, everyone! I am doing part-time proofreading for a local newspaper, and, wow, I have found some really bad, as in embarrassing, typos! To me, it is kind of like a treasure hunt, and when I find a bad one, I get to taunt the original writer of the copy! Kudos to you! I thought the job as a proofreader was extinct. I'm sure you'll have no lack of work.

I thought the job as a proofreader was extinct. This is true for The Daily Mail. Every single online article of theirs has *at least* one punctuation or spelling error.

Gladiatorial as “glad-ah-torial” when it should be “glad-ee-ah-torial”.
Oceania as “oh-she-ah-na” when it should be “oh-she-ah-nee-ah”

colonel is always pronounced "kernel" which I believe to be correct usage.
