Example - Bonnie and Clyde (1967). A landmark in its depiction of on-screen violence but for me, the movie never rises above pretty good. Amazing ending, though. I might have to revisit it. Been about 10 years since last seeing it.
I suspect a certain move from the year 1977 might be a popular answer.

Easy Rider might fit here, though I think highly of it.

The Day After arguably saved the human race. But it's a pretty middling tv movie, and not as hard hitting or memorable as the similar Threads.

(This speech is delivered after being punched in the head countless times) - "During this fight, I've seen a lot of changing, in the way you feel about me, and in the way I feel about you. In here, there were two guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than twenty million. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change! "

Don't be silly, Rocky IV is far greater than the fall of the USSR.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) Can't stand this movie, can see how it was groundbreaking at the time but now? Snow White's voice alone wants me to cast the film into a bottomless pit.

I'd go with The Nightmare before Christmas. It helped revitalize stop motion in the mainstream through its success but it has very little plot outside of the musical numbers, most of which I didn't care for. If they'd cut out a song or two they could have given Sally more backstory or character development.
I can see why people wouldn't like Snow White, it being pretty sappy in parts and Snow White's appearance fluctuates wildly depending on how skilled the person is who's animating her. Personally I like Snow White's voice even though some find it grating. I have found some voices that are extremely annoying to me though. Here's one right here. Skip ahead to 1.14 and you'll see what I mean.

The marketing of Blair Witch was much better than the film. I remember a 'documentary' came out before the film and some people I know took that seriously.
Great marketing. Not so great film.

Napoleon Dynamite. I hated it but people wouldnât shut up about it. Its quotability outlasted peopleâs collective memory of the film even existed.

What's wrong with The Exorcist's quality? The language, voice and make up combined are bit over the top for my taste.
