The 'Funnest' Slam of the 4 IMO and my personal favorite - night time tennis in New York under the lights just as football is starting up and temps are cooling down at night.
Serena Williams ranked #8 - does this make her an underdog so to speak?
Men's Draw - Joker #1, Nadal #2, Fed #3 - American Isner is 14
Who takes the Womens and Mens folks?

Anybody know / heard of this American Opelka who beat the 11th seed yesterday on the mens side?
never heard of him.
Isner won
Looks like the 4 seed went down on the Men's side today - Thiem lost
8th seed Tsitsipis went down - no real earth shatters thus far

One of my favorite sporting events of the year. Watched Rafa dismantle Millman last night. Not exactly a compelling match but it's always fun to watch elite players handle their business.

Naomi Osaka won, but she looked like shit again. This was the same Osaka from Wimbledon, just flat footed and getting visibly frustrated.
I had no idea Thiem was sick before the match and the first two sets were terrific, with both Thiem and Thomas Fabbiano playing well. After that, Thiem was visibly not right, he wasn't running hard after balls and Fabiano was all over the place.
The best tennis I saw yesterday, though, was when I had a front row (bleacher) seat for Danielle Collins (US, 35) defeating Polona Hercog (SLO, 57) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the outer courts. Just an awesome back and forth match with two players giving it their all. The crowd was into it, the players were grinding out every shot, awesome stuff. Seeing Osaka and Thiem in person was great, but the atmosphere at Ashe can be rather quiet. The outer courts are much more raucous in a good way, in part because you're able to get about 10 feet from the players.
If you ever get a chance to attend the US Open, definitely do it but make sure to spend ample time in those outer courts.

A slam is like the NCAA tourney; sure the stakes are raised with each round, but the early rounds are more fun for a different reason. There's just more going on, and it feels like anything is possible.

Why would you say the US Open is more fun than the others? Is the crowd a bit more lively? To me the all seem pretty much the same except for the court surfaces, and I think the clay courts of the French open add a bit of intrigue, if anything.

Just a personal preference - although I enjoy watching the French and Wimbledon too. Being an American - I love seeing the New York crowd get fired up. It's just a fun event to watch for me. Nighttime tennis under the New York lights as summer is winding down and you can feel fall/autumn in the air - terrific atmosphere IMO To me it signifies fall/autumn is right around the corner - college football and pro football starting up - have had enough of summer at this point and Halloween is only 2 months away. Just a great time of the year IMO - used to love staying up late nights as a kid and watching the Open on USA Network as school is approaching.

kyrgios advances to the 3rd round.
this will sound horrible - i can't stand the guy like 99% of people - but old saying in life that any publicity is good publicity.
be fun to see this guy make a deep run and then get the crap kicked out of him in the quarters or semis (I get he isn't that good - but just the fact of him being around would generate some buzz)

And another one, not directly related to Kyrgios
(*) Hockey players are allowed to pummel each other! Not that I think that is fun, but hockey fans seem to!
(**) No one really remembers Bjorn Borg? Really?

He can make some great entertaining shots and he has a powerful accurate serve. His downfall is his temper and lack of control of his emotions. He would be a fair bit higher than #30 if he didn't keep having hissyfits.

Really? Nobody remembers Stefan Edberg? One of the greats, with a temperament and heart to match his sheer skill. In a sense Kyrgios could be said to be the opposite. A lot of skill but his temperament lets him down.
