As much as I like him as an actor, do you think a day will ever come when he isn't typecasted as a quirky or insane character?

who knows but assuming you are referring to that more Pirates type of character there is really only one movie of his that stands out in that regard for me which is... The Lone Ranger (2013). in fact, it's only one out of four movies of his that stands out as the other three he's not inline with what the OP describes.
my favorite Johnny Depp movies...
1.Blow (2001) - 9/10 2.The Ninth Gate (1999) - 8/10 3.The Lone Ranger (2013) - 7/10 4.Donnie Brasco (1997) - 6.5-7/10

I've seen 24 Johnny Depp films ... 16 of them I rated 7+
#54 ranked Actor/Actress (feature films only)
I enjoy his acting ability ... just not always his films.

Good question. He's set to appear in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS this year. Perhaps he'll be toned down.

Like Jack Nicholson, Depp has become a bit too popular for his own good. Now he's only playing the kind of roles people most associate him with. Depp has incredible acting range so it's a bit shame. I wish he would do some smaller, different films just for the hell of it. It's not like he hasn't got enough money already.
Ed Wood is my favorite role from him.

I liked blow. I think it was out of the ordinary and came off genuine. I liked the depth he brought with the role and want more of that.

He has played non-quirky characters in movies that turned out great. Blow and Donnie Brasco come to mind. His range is really remarkable even when compared to most A list actors. But yes, he does do quirky quite well too.

And didn't hate The Lone Ranger either. I also really liked him in Sleepy Hollow (I love that movie).

Chalice_Of_Evil The Lone Ranger is underrated as i know it did not do too well in the theaters but it was mostly because of it's large budget as you can see below... Budget = $215million Worldwide = $260.5million USA = $89.3million Foreign = $171.2million so as you can see... it did decent in the USA but nothing great and even it's foreign total's, while nothing special, are not bad. but in the end it's the high budget that ruined it, it seems. if the budget would have been around half of that figure it would probably had a decent profit i would imagine. i am not a expert on how much one needs to be a decent profit but maybe that's a ball park estimate. p.s. The Lone Ranger is amongst my favorite Westerns to as it's a bit different in it's got more of a fun angle instead of the more typical straight forward serious Westerns that i usually like. i have not seen that movie but given it's Tim Burton(directing) chances are i won't think it's nothing special (as in 7/10 or higher) given his style does not work all that much for me anymore. with that said, it's possible i could still mildly like it (i.e. 6/10). but who knows, maybe ill get around to giving it a chance.
