Nah, it’s not gonna happen. I don’t care how good the movie will be, the Academy don’t give CBMs enough credit. It’s not really a comic book movie though, is it? It’s based on a comic book character. What else could it be?

Are you sure, DC-Fan? This thing is currently sitting at 81% on RottenTomatoes with 8.18/10 average.

True, but that’s lower than ‘Avengers: Endgame’ or ‘Black Panther’, not to mention that it fell from something like 8.66/10 to this pretty much within overnight.

I doubt it. It’s rarely what we think it will be or what we think deserves it. Green Book? Really? That white savior movie? Instead of BlackKklansman? Jonah Hill for Moneyball? Wtf? Jim Carrey snubbed for Truman Show, Man on the Moon, AND Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? TDK snubbed? The Oscars are a joke. I’ll give you something worse: 1. ‘WALL-E’ got snubbed for Best Picture over ‘The Reader’. 2. ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ got snubbed for Best Animated Feature over ‘The Boss Baby’.

To be Frank, I have been avoiding the Joker trailer leading into this past week. It wasn’t that I assumed bad things, but I’ve seen too many versions of the Joker at this point in my life to give a damn about one more.
As I went through some of the early buzz for the festival circuit, I finally relented. I was incredibly surprised how invested I was! The cinematography is some of the best I’ve seen over the years (albeit from a trailer - but you can see the love and attention here) and Joaquin’s transformation and commitment to the physical interpretation of the character looks outstanding.
I don’t think trolling Black Panther is needed when looking at this film - it should stand on its own merits. But let’s be honest, I wouldn’t expect anything less from DC-fan as he maintains his heel status on this site.
I am am genuinely excited about this film and do see a ton of merit in the early predictions of cinema genius. Ultimately, the story still needs to be gripping, and I can’t judge that until viewing - but I am bloody excited and hopeful that it measures up to this lofty expectation.

There is no way this wins Best Picture. A nomination would be crazy enough, but there’s no way it wins.

Yeah that is really worth highlighting - the last two winners. Just to emphasise the context here...of the 63 Golden Lion winners before Shape of Water, only 3 have been Oscar nominated (no winners). The award is indication of nothing other than that panel thought it was the best film screened at that festival. Not nominated and not in competition against films already released or the Oscar contenders to be released in the months leading up to Oscar. I hope Joker is good...I hope it is award worthy. But part of me, without seeing it, hopes it get's no nominations. Why? Because it will mean DC Fan will go missing again after he usually does when his Oscar predictions don't pan out. His Oscar predictions consist of people liking a DC movie somewhat.

So we know it's legitimate Oscar material before it's even released and because it won an obscure European film festival award? Doesn't sound too objective.
Let's see how it's rated in other film festivals. Let's see how it scores with fans and critics after release. Let's see how it does with BAFTA, Actors Guild, Golden Globes.

Isn’t Venice Film Festival one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world? It's not usually considered a barometer for the Best Picture Oscar winner. Cannes is probably the one that is looked to most in film festivals. And other awards like the Golden Globes even more than that.

The Marty Scorsese rip-off might lose to the real thing, considering how great the reviews for Irishman are

Isn’t Venice Film Festival one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world? It may well be, but very few films that have won the award there have even been nominated for an Oscar. Plus it's an award for the best film shown that week that the film companies asked to be in consideration. Not exactly a selection from the years releases.
