I'm sure I blanked on several as well. Happens when you've played games since you were 4 and are now >8x that.
Super Metroid is a big one I forgot about.

I've been pretty hit or miss with the Metroid franchise. I didn't really care for Return of Samus, Super, or the Prime trilogy but I quite liked Fusion, Zero Mission, and thought Samus Returns was decent.

The only Metroids I've played are Super and one or two of the earlier ones (I forget which). I'm surprised given your (seeming?) like of Metroidvanias that you wouldn't like Super. Always loved the level design of that game, as well as the music and atmosphere.

When I played Super a little over decade ago it just seemed stiffer than I really expected, like Samus didn't quite control as well as people remembered or in the later 2D games. Obviously Super is still a huge jump up from Metroid I and II, but I feel like Fusion and Zero Mission just play more smoothly.
The Metroidvanias have their own problems (Like the entire second half of Symphony of the Night kind of being a drag not only to play but that also abandons the most interesting idea from the story's first half, or the drawing nonsense in Dawn of Sorrow), but I generally prefer their more varied sets of abilities, their slightly stronger story focus, their taking inspiration from Universal/Hammer movies instead of stuff like Alien etc.

Raxivace Short piece of advice when posting on this board: if you quote someone or tag them (the way I did you here) they will get a notification in their profile. Pretty handy feature that prevents constantly having to click through threads you've posted in. Anyway, yeah, I'd agree that gameplay/controls aren't great in Super Metroid, but I don't remember it being terrible back in the day. To me, the highlight of Metroidvanias have always been the level design that neatly balances linear and non-linear design, allowing for some exploration but not just giving you a huge open world and requiring you to achieve certain thing to unlock certain parts that are connected to the parts you've been to. TBH, this was also one of my favorite aspects of the Dark Souls as I was playing it (I plan to finish it and get back to the other forum after the holidays, btw).

But yeah level design is clearly the biggest point of attraction with Super Metroid. Looking forward to your Dark Souls thoughts.
