How do you think Shelly fared as the terrified, vulnerable, yet strong wife and mother?
Was she annoying? Amazing? or just average?
I vote for amazing! The look on her face when she finally sees the axe is terrifying!!! Sooooo convincing!

I thought she was great but it is unfortunate that to get this performance out of her, Kubrick chose to be an abusive dick to her.

He went for a whole slew of takes and wore her down psychologically. Shelly seems vulnerable to begin with. I like Robert Altman more than Kubrick. I like SK's films, but I guess it's the sensibility of Altman that makes me prefer him.

I don't think Duvall really needed to be worn down by abusive Kubrick, as she would have done it on her own with the same result. The director is there to guide and coax what he wants, not sledgehammer the actor because he thinks he is the greatest thing cinema has ever known. I like Kubrick films, they are at least always interesting, but he was a prick and The Shining is not all it is cracked up to be, despite its technical quality. It is quite flat and boring in fact and Duvall is the main redeeming feature for me. Yes, Shelly probably could have done just as well on her own. Robert Altman was known for letting the actors get into their character and do their own thing and look what she did in "3 Women"! I agree with what you said about The Shining. It has some atmosphere and the hotel is kinda cool and I like Scatman Crothers. Duvall is very good, very sympathetic (as always) and she is definitely the best part of the movie for me. She plays terrified very well. This was one of those cases where you definitely felt for the character. Wendy is so sweet and I love that she fights back. I really like Jack, in general, and he's not bad here, but he's just really too over the top to be scary. On the same wavelength as Robert DeNiro was in "Cape Fear". Mostly just cartoonish and annoying (though I did prefer JN to RD in those two respective roles) Kubrick has always been so clinical in his directing and that is not exciting to me. I do like some of his movies and I suppose he is capable of projecting majesty during his best moments, but none of his films ever have any warmth. Kubrick is basically a downer.

She was the standout for me. Nicholson wasn't terrible but by the time I saw the movie, its cultural impact pretty much spoiled all the iconic scenes for me. Besides, he seemed off from the beginning, so it was just a matter of waiting for me.

I had once read that she was such a natural that people wanted her to act even though she didn't initially have the drive
