Yes, clearly. because it's clearly better than the movies it was up against that year.
but if it were up to me i would have given the best picture to Casino Royale as it's my #1 movie of 2006 as my favorite movies of 2006 are...
1.Casino Royale - 8.5-9/10 2.The Prestige - 8/10 3.Find Me Guilty 4.Running Scared - 7.5-8/10 -.Mission Impossible III -.Crank 7.Priceless - 7/10 8.The Departed 9.Deja Vu - 6.5-7/10
10.Seraphim Falls - 6-6.5/10

Of course. Both in its own time and especially when compared with the SJW, politically motivated trash that has won in recent years.
(To say nothing of the absolute dumpster fire that was LaLa Land...)

But "The Departed" was better crafted and more well done than CR imo. Both are great tho.

salomonjCasino Royale is within my Top 29 movies where as The Departed is within my Top 199 movies. with that said... The Departed used to be a 10/10 for me until a re-watch on Oct 9th 2016. my previous re-watch was Aug 6th 2014 and at this time it was still a 10/10. so basically it took a hit somewhere between those two dates for me as, while it's still solid for me, i simply don't enjoy watching it to any super high degree anymore. hence, 10/10 back to it's current 7/10. still, The Departed remains within My Favorite Movies.

Yes, it's my second favorite Scorsese film (after The Aviator).

No. Scorsese and his writers took a superior Hong Kong police thriller (Eng. title "Infernal Affairs" with mega-stars Andy Lau and Tony Chiu-Wei Leung), added some new characters, expanded the dialog scenes and passed it off as something new. But anyone who has seen this film knows that "The Departed" is without any creative input of its own; it is virtually a copy and paste, a rip-off.

It's one of my all-time favorites films. I think it deserved every award it got and possibly some it didn't.

I only saw The Queen and Letters from Iwo Jima from the 2006 nominees. Compared with those two, I'd pick The Departed.

At the time, & that's all that matters because the Oscars are not projected trophies, they are time capsule rewards, I thought United 93 was the finest cinematic achievement of that year.
I also knew it had next to zero chance of earning enough votes to win. Sometimes a nomination is strong enough to add for a great legacy... The Thin Red Line, Master & Commander, Pulp Fiction, etc. Winning can also be a burden, like this thread.

No! Little Miss Sunshine has more of a following today and is more revèred. Even Blood Diamond was a better film and wasn't nominated. The Departed, was average Scorsese. Little Miss Sunshine? Seriously? I'm not going to say you're wrong but I'm extremely skeptical.

(To say nothing of the absolute dumpster fire that was LaLa Land...)Excuse me!? You didn't think I was hard enough on it either, innit? I know. I wrote that originally and was like, "is 'dumpster fire' even adequate to describe this sizzling turd on a hot tin roof?!" But I ultimately thought it would be harsh enough. So: point taken: "To say nothing of the absolute dumpster fire and sizzling turd on a hot tin roof that was LaLa Land..." Better? Good call, by the way...
