Yeah, I read Rankin saying that, but having read every single one, the character's responses over the span of the novels certainly paint him that way. Especially the ones based amid the Scottish Parliament.

Some of the later Rebus books are ruined by endings which largely go "This is corruption which goes right to the top of Scottish politics!", which is about as anti-climactic an ending as I can think of. As someone who's read all the books though, I think Rebus is distinctly unpolitical, or at best entirely distrusting of politicians, isn't nationalistic, and wouldn't necessarily have an opinion.
