I remember watching the first season. And at the end of it I still didn't know what the hell was going on.

I remember watching the first season. And at the end of it I still didn't know what the hell was going on. The cops were trying to apprehend Avon Barksdale, Stringer Bell and as many other high level drug pushers they could get their hands on. Thats the gist anyhow.

I remember watching the first season. And at the end of it I still didn't know what the hell was going on. How? The first season of The Wire is maybe the most well written season of any show. That does not mean it is my favorite, but the superb writing cannot be denied.

Midway through season 4...just a quick recap of thoughts...
I love the constant mirroring between the problems facing drug and criminal organizations and the problems facing police officers. They are often very similar, deliberately. I like that.
The McNulty/Stringer Bell 'feud' that lasted 3 years was an interesting one. Particularly on McNultys part...Bell is like an addiction to him.
In season 1 I don't know if they knew which one between Carver and Herc they wanted to become a 'good' cop. There were some oddly conflicting scenes where one moment Carver would seem to be the better police of the two and others Herc. Moving forward I prefer the two together, but once they separate and Carver really steps up and Herc starts to go down it's kind of frustrating in a way.
I like the port stuff but i still kind of find Ziggy to be annoying. Even knowing how things go for him, i have a hard time feeling sorry. Frank and Nick are good tho.
I'm glad the latter seasons focus less on the personal home lives of most everyone. It's one aspect i care very little about and in season 1 there was too much D and Chardine and McNultys failed marriage.
I don't really like Marlo. He's too cold to be an interesting character. I much preferred Bell and Avon in that regard. Even Prop Joe is more interesting. Chris and Snoop are great tho.
Omar is great.

She is not really acting on the show. Marlo was okay. I like him MUCH better in season five. I like what you said about Herc and Carver. I felt like in the beginning they were both kind of screw ups and easily influenced. I feel that Carver just grew more as a person in the long run, once he was separated from the bad influences. Granted, I have to watch the show again. It has been a few years since I have watched it and some of the details are hazy.

Marlo is a different kind of criminal as you'll see.

Marlo is a different kind of criminal as you'll see. I’ve already seen it. This is a rewatch...but I still don’t care as much for Marlo. Compared to Avon, Stringer or Prop Joe at least.

First series was superb, the rest varied in quality I thought. David Simon's original book is a must read though. Also The Deuce, created by him and one of the world's finest crime fiction writers George P Pelecanos is the best thing on TV for the last 3 seasons.

Finally caught it all in a row, right after I finished Game of Thrones no less. 2021 is my year of tv. S P O I L E R SSeason rankings: 5 - Huge monkey wrenches into both the BPD & The Sun to get at Marlo, I love the show the most when the most worlds colliding at once. Tremendous series finale/wrap to the show's themes & character arcs. Omar's fate was perfect for the show's vision. I'd seen the ending coming miles away, just like the film The City of God hands the game over to a new kid/crew & wheel keeps turning , the war on drugs never ends in Baltimore because wars end. 3 - Stringer trying to go legit, Barksdale crew v Marlo's, Cutty is a great newcomer. The police do seem less valuable here, with Hamsterdam being allowed. The most balanced season I think. 2 - While I see a lot of angst about this season & the portlands, I think it was great they could open the show up wider & stay on track with the drug trade still ruling the Baltimore world. Inviting The Greek in to show the true drug chain of command was welcome. 1 - The densest season of storytelling & narrative, it served solid bedrock for the series. Bubbles, Omar, McNulty, Bunk, Freamon, Kima... they all have great moments to keep things alive & clicking. I was never really a D'Angelo fan, he seemed too old to be the kid in the pit, & too young to know wtf was going on above & around him. 4 - The school storyline didn't payoff nearly as well for me, not even until I saw some of the kids return in S5. Marlo was never a respectable villain either, so I just kept rooting for Omar to get in his head. The police seemed in the dark more about things in this season than any other.
