So, first episode is out. What do people think of the new companion?
I like that the show had her play an active part and be somewhat useful. But I also liked that they didn't try to force "Best and most important companion EVAR!" onto us. One of the things that massively annoyed me about Clara was how they made her SO important - first as "The Impossible Girl", then as the woman who inspired the Doctor as a child, and then revealing that she's saved the Doctor's life constantly - essentially making her more important to the show than he was.
Potts seems a lot more grounded. She's no useless female, but she is out of her depth and knows it. I like that in a companion, I guess because I know I'd be out of my depth if I suddenly found myself facing monsters, aliens, time travel, etc. Any real person would.
So I vote 5... so far. I might change that as episodes go on, though.

SO far, we've only seen her onscreen for an hour and my thoughts so far are: She's okay...
I can oddly see her becoming a mix of Martha & Donna (I'm probably one of the few Whovians of the ones I know personally who perfers Donna to someone like Martha, whom I liked at first, but eventually fell out with).
One thing that I PRAY the BBC stops is the whole "WE HAVE A GAY COMPANION FOR THE FIRST TIME shtick like that "falling in love at first sight" scene that felt like at ANY MOMENT would turn into either a pandering & forced "#LoveWins" kiss or a TV-14 lesbian sex scene... I DON'T NEED CRINGE in Doctor Who! 😠 Also, Bill's not #1... she's #4

She sucks. That was one of the worst episodes I've ever seen.

I liked her. Obviously you can't make a proper judgement based on a single episode but I enjoyed that episode more than most of the 12/ Clara stories. Pearl Mackie had good chemistry with Capaldi and I'm looking forward to spending a series with the two of them.

I liked Martha, except I always felt that something weird was going on with the actress. The way she seemed to dip in and out of the show... it was like either the writers didn't like the character or the actress, or the actress didn't like the show much. Or something. Hmm, lesbianism doesn't make me cringe so that wasn't a biggie to me. And I thought they fell more in lust than love, so... I dunno, I thought they did what they needed to to establish the character without being over the top about it.

I really enjoyed the episode and thought Bill was great, so for now she's a 5.
She's funny and charming and completely different to Clara (I did like Clara but got bored of the dynamic between her and The Doctor after a while). It's good to have some humour in the show.

I might change that as episodes go on, though. I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that Bill's sexuality will not be a significant plot point in the remainder of her run as companion. It might get randomly mentioned here and there but that's it. This was the introductory episode and so her potential love interest played a key role in the plot. But now that it's been established, I think the showrunners will make it a point that it's not the defining part of who she is. It would certainly be a welcome change from the previous NuWho companions: Rose - in love with the Doctor Martha - unrequited love for the Doctor Donna - NOT interested in the Doctor and reminding you about it every moment Amy - Rory Clara - Danny

She's okay. I mean, we've only seen her in one episode so far, and I imagine she'll grow and evolve as the show progresses. But I haven't really seen anything to hate or like about her yet. It'll usually take more than one episode for me to form an opinion on a character.

I think the showrunners will make it a point that it's not the defining part of who she is. Given how AWFUL the writing has been the last few seasons, why would you assume that? Does Jenny Flint have ANY personality traits aside from being "married to Madame Vastra"? Vastra is a one-dimension character and Jenny Flint is a ZERO dimensional character that only exists to be "Vastra's wife" so the writers can say "look at how PROGRESSIVE we are, we showed gay marriage!!!" This time around the writing team kept insisting that having Bill be gay was "no big deal in today's day and age", yet the ONLY thing they could think of to market the show this season was "SHE'S GAY!!!" and have to character reveal she's a lesbian almost the instant she was introduced, and to make that a major plot point. And you think these hacks will be able to now turn that around 180o degrees and make her a totally engaging three dimensional character in her own right, even if the audience knew nothing about her sexual orientation? I'll say one thing for Russell T. Davis, at least, since he was a gay guy, he could write gay characters that existed for a reason other than to just "be gay" on screen and tell everyone about it. It's time to boycott "Series 10" of Doctor Who. Fans must wake up and accept this fact. The sooner Moffett goes, the better.

She's okay, so far. It's kind of hard to judge a character on just one episode, especially when that episode was so mediocre.
It was by no means the worst episode since the reboot, but it was far from good. What exactly was the point of it all? It just seemed hastily written, several elements just thrown together without much further thought to it all.
It did not give her much opportunity to shine, at all. But perhaps that will change during the next episodes. Although I have low expectations of this season.

I'm still liking her in the second episode. Apparently they are deliberately making this season one that can serve as a jumping in point for new viewers. Hence the first episode being called "The Pilot". One of the nice things about that is that they really seem to be trying to get Bill to ask the sort of questions that a real person would actually ask. Not just the simple stuff (You have two hearts?") but questioning the fundamentals of his lifestyle and why he lives the way he does. I'm especially intrigued by the bit in the "next time" segment where she asks him... "Have you ever killed anyone?" Because let's face it, he does that quite often, and companions generally don't seem to think about it much. Which is seriously unrealistic. So far it seems to me that Bill is acting exactly the way you'd expect a real person to act. I like that - companions are supposed to be audience surrogates, and she's filling the role well. I do agree that the first two episodes have been fairly mediocre, though. Not bad, just okay.

Given how AWFUL the writing has been the last few seasons I disagree with your premise. Given that he's already announced that he's leaving, trying to get people to boycott the show comes across as pointless and kind of a low-IQ thing.

Nice to hear how old the Doctor is now, quite a shock The next episode seems very interesting, and that question is indeed quite intrigueing. I wonder what his reply is going to be

I disagree with your premise. And I stand by what I said: Maybe you Moffat shills think that's "good writing" and lap it up, but the public in general realizes how much it sucks and how Moffat hypocritically says he creates gay characters to show that "being gay in no big deal in the 21st century" yet his worthless scripts give those characters absolutely NO personality traits aside from "being gay". Jenny Flint is a completely worthless character and now you Moffat fans will eagerly put up with a whole season of that type of wretched writing. Enjoy it all you want, viewers will continue to tune OUT in droves until Moffat is gone.
