Just got back from it and overall I really dug it! Phoenix goes for broke here & carries the film. I literally couldn't take my eyes off him. There were some predictable moments but overall I did like what Todd Phillips accomplished with this. It was gritty & grim to a fault but still a very engrossing/entertaining film that I hope makes a lot of money.
I"ll add some more thoughts later.
8.5/10

I was quite disappointed by it. I was liking where it seemed to be heading, but it just kept going and going and going and never got there.
The Joker never showed that he would become the Clown Prince of Crime. Also Joaquin Phoenix was only the Joker for like 8 minutes and he once again didn't come anywhere close to showing that he would be the Clown Prince of Crime.
Also Joaquin had a great Joker laugh, but he never stuck with the same laugh he used for the Joker because there were so many different ones. And he hardly actually did that laugh when he actually became the Joker.
Oh ya. And his uncontrollable laughter when he was sad, depressed or whatever was annoying. Also I didn't want to feel sympathy for the Joker, but that's kind of what the movie was going for.

a good movie and I appreciate the different style of comic book inspired adaptation. Phoenix carries the story very well with a convincing portrayal of Arthur Fleck. The cinematography is spectacular and use of visual story telling is refreshing to see in a superhero movie. The shots of him dancing throughout the film is a good example of this.
However, as a "Joker" movie Im not totally sold. I just cant envisage this joker being smart enough to be the leader of a criminal posse or having the intelligence to take on Batman and remain a credible threat. Joker in all his animated and movie representations has had a cunning, suave, smart underlayer from his insane appearance. Now Joquains Joker definitely nails down the insane half of the character. But at the end of the day he still is severely mentally underdeveloped and the idea he can be the clown prince of crime is too farfetched. From that angle I can understand why some fans and critics are saying this is a Joker movie in name only and its really about a loner outcast who just happens to be interested in comedy and wears a clown outfit as his daytime job.
Overall its a good movie which is connecting with audiences it seems. I would give it 7/10.

Where Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight was a terrorist pushing Batman and Gotham to its limits on how far they'd go for security, Phoenix in Joker is more about what happens when that society abandons its most vulnerable. Those of you expecting comic book action won't find it here and I'm glad for it. What we get is a study in what can happen should we have "one bad day" or weeks in this case. Arthur Fleck's decent into madness is masterfully portrayed by Phoenix and honestly I was rooting for him and laughing along with til the end. If Phoenix doesn't get nominated for an academy award then the Oscars are further shown to be a complete travesty awarding those with the right political opinion and not great film performances. This is my fav movie of the year, best joker performance and I feel sorry for whoever wears the clown makeup next as they have a helluva performance to top. Amazing film!

I liked it quite a bit, but I’d like to see it again. Phoenix was so good, but I can’t see him as the “real” Joker. He lacks the evil genius side of the character.

I think they’ll nominate him just for the simple fact that people will go ballistic (perhaps justifiably so) if they don’t. He deserves a nomination, though. It’s not just hype, he was great.

I tend to agree But I also think he is showing more and more intelligence throughout the movie as he stops taking medicine etc. so i Could see it, but you are correct it is a seeming limitation .

Amazing film! agreed, it seems there is nowhere to go with joker anymore after these great performances. I kinda feel bad fo Jared Leto who is an amazing actor bot got the weakest movie to play Joker in... I think Phoenix will end up taking the award home though.

No exaggeration, one of the finest films I have ever seen.
As a screenwriter this is what you aim for. This kind of in depth, deeply personal character study that define masterpieces. From the very first frame to the last, one is memorized by everything Joker is doing, thinking, and, well, laughing at. Joaquin Phoenix, I mean what can I say. One of the very, very best acting performances I have ever seen. Just amazing, as overused as that word is, amazing. It has been many years since I've been so utterly blown away by a film. A rare 10/10 from me.

Overall its a good movie which is connecting with audiences it seems. I would give it 7/10. yeah this is not the real joker. Its about a delusional abused man who resembles the joker, and him becoming the joker is just the film's way of adding to that delusion of grandeur. This is just about some crazy man. He never shot the talk show man, never led a clown riot, never killed any psych ward therapist, it's all in his head obviously. He did kill his former coworker with the gun and the 3 bankers in the subway. They call it Gotham but it's really NYC. Not sure about Thomas Wayne tho.

I was anticipating that I’d probably like it, but I enjoyed it far more than expected. It’s haunting, disturbing, and Todd Phillips directed his ass off. Very impressive turn from stuff like Due Date. It is my favorite movie this year so far.

I would hope no one involved in the film ever confirms such and such never happened. If it all takes place in his head, thereby negating the ending, that is a cheap cop-out IMO and makes me feel like I wasted 2 hours. I really hate when films exploit the "it's all in their head" theme.
