8. Loved the second half but the first dragged at places for me. Once things kicked off... crazy ride.

A solid 7.5 out of 10. Phoenix was great, the sound and visuals were great. Some loose elements of the plot but not enough to detract from the film.
Better than 99% of the awful comic book universe films in the last decade.

5/10 (Thumbs Down)
it's watchable but ultimately has no re-watch value for me and that's where movies are ultimately made or broke. to me it's just a bit too negative in overall tone, which dulls my overall interest in it, even though it's well shot at times and Phoenix is solid enough (but overpraised like I expected). so it was a decent enough one time viewing. but, like I figured going into it, it's not going to be anywhere near as good as it's IMDb average rating suggests it is.
p.s. before seeing it my prediction was basically this... decent chance of a 6/10, but no lower than a 5/10 (and I figured a 6-6.5/10 would be the top end for it). I got roughly what I thought it would be, maybe a little less.

6/10. Great at face value; cinematography is dazzling, Gotham has never been better, score is STELLAR, Phoenix is entertaining--but it fundamentally fails at a cohesive why or explanation behind Joker's descent into madness. He's stepping into a fridge now. Why? No reason, it's clear Phillips put little effort into the script nor does he understand what made his influencer films so great (Taxi Driver, KoC etc...). I still like it well enough, though. Glad Phillips pulled it off and I hate how everyone's made the man public enemy #1 for NO REASON AT ALL.

I'll be shocked if Joaquin Phoenix isn't picking up an Oscar next weekend. Kudos to Todd Phillips for totally nailing the look and feel of 1981 New York City.
This film will be discussed for many years to come. I really want to give it a 10, but didn't quite go there.
