I was always confused by that ending. Was Jack always the caretaker or was Grady just saying that to fuck with him? That picture I feel like took place after Jack froze to death and became a spirit.

No. Theres nothing happy about that ending. Jack was consumed by the hotel.

No. Theres nothing happy about that ending. Jack was consumed by the hotel. The ending of the movie isn't happy, but is the character of Jack Torrence himself "happy" if he's in a Grady-like state of not remembering and/or major denial?
