As featured on a recent New Zealand cold case show: Japanese woman Kayo Matsuzawa came to New Zealand in 1997 to study English in Christchurch and to work and travel, the young woman was full of life and keen to explore the new country she had just moved to. On the 11th of September 1998, she flew to Auckland city and checked into a backpackers on Fort Street in the CBD, before heading out to explore the city that afternoon. She would never return. Eleven days later her naked and decomposing body was found in a small, somewhat unnoticeable utility room off a service stairwell in the Centrecourt building, Queen Street, Central Auckland. (To me the location where her body was found is a very important detail, whoever murdered Kayo, must of had knowledge of this utility room and must of had an inkling that Kayo would not be discovered right away if she was left here) Police believe 29-year-old Kayo had only been in the city for several hours before she met her killer. The last sighting of the young woman was from security camera footage outside the BNZ in Queen St, shortly after she had checked into a downtown-backpackers in Fort Street. Both the bank and backpackers are close to the Centrecourt building where Kayo’s body was found. Police think Kayo may have been targeted by a man who has approached her that afternoon. It is possible this man may have spiked her drink. Whatever the case the crime was brazen and cold blooded. In a recent development, within the last two years, after further testing was done on samples taken originally back in 1998, Police have revealed that they have a new lead, unknown male DNA material was located under Kayo’s fingernails. Through initial investigations, Kayo’s passport was recovered from a public rubbish bin close to where her body was discovered, to this day her clothes and jewellery have never been found. Kayo was wearing black bootleg pants, a black jacket, black shoes and carrying a backpack. She had crescent-shaped earrings and a small delicate gold ring with a single pink stone. Do you have any information about these items or this horrific crime? To this day Kayo’s family are yet to receive any answers or see anyone brought to justice, their pain and sorrow must be unimaginable. nzh.tw/12106272
