It was the morning of March 1st, 1985, when 18-year-old Vijaykumar Parbhubhai Patel set out to go to work. Vijaykumar, who also went by the nickname Vijay or the English name Victor, had a shift that Friday at his restaurant job from noon to 7PM.
The restaurant was in the town of Aurora, Missouri. Aurora is a small town located in Missouri's rural Lawrence County. At the time of the 1980 census, the town's population was 6,437. The restaurant was located in what would have been a very familiar area to Vijay- it was next door to the Sands Motel, which Vijay's family had owned since they'd arrived in the area in 1981. The Sands Motel was located just north of the junction of US Route 60 and Missouri Route 39 (Note: the motel appears to no longer exist.)
But Vijay never arrived at the restaurant. As it turned out, nobody knew his whereabouts after he'd left for work. Vijay was reported missing as of March 1st, 1985. To this day, he has never been heard from again.
A student at Aurora High School, Vijay was not a citizen of the USA at the time of his disappearance (he was of Indian descent and it appears he was born there), and he left his passport at home. At the time of his disappearance, Vijay was driving his car, a green Pontiac 2+2. The car has never been located, as far as the information on the case indicates.
Besides what I've compiled here, there unfortunately doesn't seem to be much more information available in Vijay's case. I couldn't find any articles about him on Newspapers.com, even while searching all the possible variations of his name. Vijay would be 53 years old today, and he is classified as endangered missing. His dentals, DNA, and fingerprints do not appear to be on file. He is listed as a graduate of the Class of 1985 at Aurora High School, despite being unable to complete the school year.
Vijay's case is very mysterious, as it really seems he was just going about his day when he disappeared. There really is no obvious explanation for what could have happened to him. It does not seem like his commute to work was a long one; what could have possibly happened to him in such a relatively short time? Additionally, where is his car? Could it be related to his disappearance, or could it have just been found abandoned by a car thief?
I have not seen any write-ups of this case previously, so I hoped making this post would raise awareness of it. I did my best to include all the information I could, so if anyone finds any information I have missed, please share.
