Vittorio de Sica's Umberto D 1952: Oh, one of the great ones, teleadm. Thanks for remembering it.
Adding this: Spanky and Petey from the original Our Gang series.

I actually have BIG RED on DVD. It’s one of those wonderful heartbreaking happy movies that Disney was so good at once upon a time.

I've failed miserably in previous attempts to post images on this forum, but the thread won't be complete without mentioning the canine companions of Bae Doona in Barking Dogs Never Bite and Don Johnson in A Boy and His Dog.
There's also a gorgeous Chinese movie that was released in the English speaking world as Postmen in the Mountains - it would have been way cooler to go with the literal translation of the original title, That Mountain, That Man, That Dog (not to mention more fitting with the plot of the film - the eldest son's struggle to prove himself as loyal and worthy as the family dog!)

Re: Our Gang's Pete the Pup--one of my favorite of the Gang's shorts, Dogs is Dogs (1931) features one of the worst movie dogs ever. While Pete is the good dog that belongs to Wheezer, Wheezer's obnoxious stepbrother Sherwood owns a "Rin Tin Tin" type of dog, Nero, who, unlike Lassie and other movie hero dogs, actually pushes his owner down a well before running off to eat the neighbor's chickens (for which Pete takes the rap).
