(Pronounced Broccoli "Rob") I think I'd heard of Rabe, but didn't know what it was ... or, how to pronounce it. A couple of days ago, I was in a supermarket, where a well-known local produce company, " Andy Boy," was giving away 2 bunches of Broccoli Rabe, to any shopper who would take it. Obviously, it was an effort to raise awareness to consumers. They provided recipe cards, as well as nutritional information. It's a green, leafy vegetable like kale, or spinach that has small "florets," of something that looks like broccoli, interspersed among the leaves. According to "Google," which knows all, it's a cousin to the turnip. I like all-of-the-above, so I gladly accepted. There are online recipes, and I followed the one from "Laura in the Kitchen," on YouTube. She focuses on Italian cuisine, as she grew up in Italy, and showed how it was prepared (sauteed), in her family. She said that it had some bitterness to it. But, that didn't bother me ... so does spinach, and other "leafy greens." I followed her recipe, and it was BLAH! It wasn't horrible. There just wasn't much to it. Other greens are far more flavorful. Actually, I made one addition to her technique, in adding a tablespoon of bacon grease to the olive oil. Bacon flavor ruins NOTHING! And, a glorious wilted-spinach salad requires bacon. Any thoughts? That was only one try, but I'm missing something. www.youtube.com/results?search_query=broccoli+rabe+recipe

Hmmm. That might have possibilities, with the garlic and bacon flavors. However, in following Laura's recipe, I added the cup of water, and found that was unnecessary. Even allowing time for the water to evaporate, I was left with a limp "watery" mixture. The Andy Boy company gave us nice, reusable grocery bags, though. Always look on the bright side.

Thanks, Enigma! Always good to see you.
Actually, it might be better as a Pesto, or a Sandwich additive. It ... or, my handling of the dish that I did ... certainly, left something to be desired.
As I said, the company gave each customer 2 bunches. I have the 2nd one in my crisper. I don't want to give up on it, without another try.

I think your experience is probably closer to most! I didn't know if you would remember me. It has been a long time!

I remember you well. I hadn't seen you on the "F&D" board, on the new boards. It's great to reconnect.

We know it as rapini up here in Toronto. It tends to be a little bitter. All greens in my house are done "greek" style. Put them in a frying pan with the water that you have used to rinse them. Let them wilt, and more water if not tender enough.
Dress with olive oil and lemon. That's it.

It's a vegetable my father always loved, and I know a lot of people who swear up and down by it. I personally can't stand it, it's just so bitter. Broccoli and broccolini I love, but just can't get paste the bitterness of broccoli rabe. It's possible (and likely) that I'm preparing it wrong but alas.

I didn't like it as a kid and my parents & grandparents had it with everything! I like it now. Make it mixed in with mashed potatoes, tons of garlic, & olive oil. Then again ANYthing is good with tons of garlic & olive oil!!!

Goz, it's good to see you posting! I've been concerned about you, through the fires. From what I read it sounds like the coastal regions around Sydney are hard hit.
I've not tried broccolini, but it's on my to-try list. Broccoli rabe is fine, but I much prefer plain old "garden variety" broccoli.

I know this a Food Board, however I take this opportunity to assure you that me personally is safe is I live within 100 yards of the Pacific Ocean, however what is happening in my country ( as the MOST vulnerable to man made climate change in the world} is apocalyptic, and should be a warning to the whole world as we are the most vulnerable, yet if could come to all mankind if globalism and human co-operation is NOT adopted NOW. FUCK TRUMP FUCK OUR EVANGELICAL PRIME MINISTER... THEY ARE WRONG. We are living the consequences of man made greed anti-intellectualism and political rejection of the science over the last 50 years rejected by the coal power and media driven losers who have all the money. To be honest America has contributed MOST to this 'libertarian' inspired selfish extremist Capitalism and in politic, instead of the Democratic Socialism that has centred other countries, Great Britain, the rest of the Commonwealth countries and Scandinavia and most of Europe. I am unusually angry.

Well, I'm glad that you're OK. Another poster to the Politics Board, "Ant-Mac," said that he's not in fire danger. But, nobody is nobody is "OK or "alright," through this ... the tragedy is unimaginable on all levels.
(Personally, I have no argument with your sociopolitical analysis.)
