Hmm I havent seen it in a long time. I remember the clown being spooky. The most interesting thing with this is the lawsuit involving Eleanor Parker's son--he wrote a script which he sent to Spielberg and many elements ended up in the movie (there was also a tv movie around the same time about someone being pulled into a tv set which never aired--I'd like to see that). There was to be a court case with Ray Bradbury as the expert witness for the plaintiff and Richard Matheson for the defense but they settled out of court.
It sounds like Hooper suffered a career slap thanks to Spielberg's alleged involvement but I heard Spielberg got the idea of having a beard and baseball cap from Hooper.

I really like the film and think it holds up well. It used to be my "go to" Halloween film for a while. It's still a better film than 99% of all the haunted house horror movies that have come out since.
It has a few scares here and there, other than the clown bit. I always thought the scene when the camera starts moving towards the stairs with the lights coming down it, very well done and creepy. On the other hand there are parts where the special effects look dated and silly.
For the most part it's very enjoyable and has an 80's Spielberg-esque charm to it. The remake is a heap of crap too, so if that was someone's idea of believing the original didn't hold up and could be bettered or equalled, they failed badly.

I thought it was great as a 12 year old... When I came back to it at 20, it didn't seem so good. The Spielbergian touches are icky and there's that unappealing old bag that plays the psychic. I bought a copy a few years back, but I haven't got to it again. Zelda Rubinstein? Wasn't her character supposed to be unappealing?

I also disagree...
It was a great movie back then...
I really don't understand what this "holds up" thing is all about, that people reference when they talk about older films... Nothing's changed with the movie (Unlike the original Star Wars Films)... It's still the same movie that was made almost 40 years ago, every time I've seen it since...
I think it is still a great movie...

Its been a few years since I've seen it but I really enjoyed it when I saw it. Sure it wasn't "scary" but I was entertained and that is what matters for me. Not like other great films like Alien or the 80s remake of The Thing ever scared me either, great films regardless.
