The renowned version of The Maltese Falcon is a remake.
So is Malick's The Thin Red Line.
I prefer the remake of Cape Fear to the original. Same with the 1979 All Quiet On The Western Front. Probably not common views.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) That's what I was going to say. I found the original very dull, but the remake was actually intense and disturbing and the characters were solid, so I actually cared what happened to them.

Plenty of remakes have been better, or at least different enough to be very interesting in their own right.
Some of my all time favorites ( Battlestar Galactica, Speed Racer, Godzilla, Dark Knight, King Kong, Miami Vice ) fit this description.

I would say the Hills Have Eyes EXCEPT once I watched the original, I was surprised all the core dramatic stuff was copied from the original including the dialogue. "That's not my Bob!" It annoyed me.
It isn't such a radical remake as the Fly or Invasion of the Body Snatchers or the Thing or the Blob (which I like better than the original) which changed just about everything.

I did not care for the 1956 version at all, and the actors were all boring, especially Kevin McCarthy, whom I harbor an irrational dislike for. The remake is suspenseful and atmospheric and I like all four leads, with Veronica Cartwright being the clear stand out for me. Miss Cartwright is THE best screamer ever! Oh, god, her screams give me the goosepimples!

Remakes that are a rather large improvement over the original...
1)True Grit (2010) (8-8.5/10) vs True Grit (1969) (4/10)
2)The Departed (2006) (7.5-8/10) vs Infernal Affairs (2002) (5/10)
3)Ocean's Eleven (2001) (6/10(was a 9/10 for me at one point)) vs Ocean's 11 (1960) (2/10) (NOTE: normally this would not be worth listing given the 2001 movie is only a 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) for me but given the 1960 movie is boring(i.e. I could not finish it due to boredom), that makes it a rather large improvement)
