Is the Irishiman Japanese? . It's been a while since we got a solid Yakuza movie. In America anyway.

Scorsese's cameo in Taxi Driver--he pretty much steals the movie from De Niro. It could work as a short film. Brave role for him to take. lol

Directorially, he really is as good as it gets. Very few people can make a thoroughly mediocre script like that of Casino pop 'n sizzle like that.

ck100I just assume it's over-hyped as while I think it's got a reasonable chance to stand out (so it's got a reasonable chance of being one of my strongest movies of 2019), I personally am not expecting to like it more than Casino (1995)/The Departed (2006) if you want to stick strictly to Scorsese's other gangster movies. but in general the only Scorsese movies that stand out for me are... 1)The Color of Money (1986) (8/10) 2-3)The Departed (2006)/Casino (1995)(both 7.5-8/10) 4)The Aviator (2004) (7/10). hopefully The Irishman (2019) makes that list. but anyways, I am hoping I am underestimating The Irishman (2019). but personally, I don't think ill give it more than a 7/10. but just the chance it can reach 7/10 territory, based on my impression of things so far, means I got some legit hopes for it as in general at this point in time there are not many movies that I have not already seen that I go into thinking they got a decent chance at cracking 7/10+ status. so basically I am confident it won't score lower than a 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) for me but at the same time I think, given my impression from the trailer etc, it probably won't score higher than a 7/10. if it goes above a 7/10 ill have underestimated it (which don't happen much for me in general, but I hope I am underestimating it as I like when that happens) or if it goes below a 6/10 (i.e. a 5/10 or less) ill have overestimated it.

I'm quite confident it will at least be a good movie and possibly on the level, at the very least, of movies like Casino and The Departed, but seeing all the critical praise does kind of raise my expectations here as well as the concern of it possibly being overhyped/overrated. I mean people are treating it like this is the finest film Scorsese has ever made and I have a feeling that's not really true in this case (but that doesn't mean it's not good). I am concerned about this movie being overhyped and overrated. I mean weren't people having similar reactions to The Departed when it first came out? I enjoy The Departed, but I don't know if I'd have it on the same level of something like Goodfellas or Raging Bull (just my opinion). I'd love to be proven wrong and have this be one of Scorsese's finest films, but people need to be careful when they see a film with such high praise, especially a film from a director who still makes good work, but his best years are behind him.

ck100I see what you mean but it seems we have differing opinions on what's Scorsese's top movies as I never thought much of some of his praised movies from the past like Taxi Driver/Raging Bull etc, which I tend to find to be pretty average/forgettable. The Departed/Casino on the other hand is within my Top 78 movies straight up. hell, I used to praise Goodfellas but that's since fallen off. but with that said... I see what you mean with the praise but at the same time I don't put too much stock into critics as they are often disconnected with the people it seems. like I realize that sometimes the people just like really basic things like super hero movies etc (not to say those are automatically bad, but you can see my general point here) and critics can go to more of the other extreme with them praising more of the snob types of movies and the like, but I guess I try to find some sort of balance of those two things in what's of any real worth etc. because I tend to find more known movies, or at least semi-known movies, tend to be better in general than movies that are mostly unknown to a lot of people. but I guess at the same time if one gauged the general publics praise of movies based largely on the movies that did the most $$$ in the theaters, in this regard I would be disagreeing with them more often than not as, at least in my mind, the movies that tend to do huge $$$ tend to be nothing special (although there can be some exceptions here and there). but anyways... I would not be surprised if some are sort of overpraising it because it's Scorsese+DeNiro+Pacino etc in a quality gangster/crime movie for probably one last time as they are getting up there in age. but yeah, I think The Departed was quite hyped up back when it was released. initially I was disappointed with it on my initial viewing but it grew on me with time as that's one of those movies my score fluctuated up and down as time passed as I want to say on my initial viewing it was something around a 7/10 then eventually hit 10/10 status and then in Oct 2016 it went from a 10/10 to a 7/10 for me and then on my most recent viewing in Apr 2019 it went from a 7/10 back to a 7.5-8/10. but I guess in short, while it's score fluctuated as the years passed, after I got over my initial disappointment, it grew on me and has remained among my favorite movies and has not fallen out of that status so far. I have seen it four times since I have been keeping logs of all of the movies I see which is Dec 27th 2011 to date. so to guesstimate how many times I have seen The Departed I would probably say AT LEAST 6-7 times since Dec 2012 is the oldest re-watch of it I got on file and I would have probably seen it around the time it was out on video, which is probably about early 2007. so if you figure my initial viewing was probably sometime in 2007, it's probably likely I have seen it at least one or two more times between there and my Dec 2012 viewing, hence, my 6-7 times for a conservative figure is probably close and could be a bit more. ill stop babbling now That's one thing I have learned over the years NOT to buy into as you will likely be disappointed more often than not if you go into a movie expecting the world of it as when I go into a typical movie I see I got into it with my typical level of expectations which is around average-ish give or take a bit and I can usually tell if a movie has a chance of standing out for me.

I think the much needed break from di crappio will help Scorsese.

ck100 but anyways... I would not be surprised if some are sort of overpraising it because it's Scorsese+DeNiro+Pacino etc in a quality gangster/crime movie for probably one last time as they are getting up there in age. That's certainly a concern in terms of worrying about the film being possibly overrated/overpraised. It almost feels like a kneejerk reaction from critics to heavily praise a new Scorsese film starring De Niro and Pesci given their past work. It's like how Godfather III got overpraised and even nominated for awards when first released partly because of its association with the previous Godfather films and how those films got praise and awards when they were released. I'm reminded of Scorsese getting his Oscar for Best Director for The Departed and a lot of people have said he really got it because of "pity" since the Academy didn't give him an Oscar in the past and were concerned he would never get one since he's up there in age. That Oscar win was more of a "lifetime achievement" win.

imo it is overrated. I've seen it and whilst it is a solid 7/10 gangster epic, I'm not sure if it has the vibrancy and freshness that his other movies have. It does feel a little derivative. My ranking of Scorsese would be
1) The Departed 2) Silence 3) Goodfellas 4) Taxi Driver 5) Wolf of Wall Street 6) Casino 7) The Irishman 8) Shutter Island 9) Color of Money
I have not seen his other productions. The problem with The Irishman when compared to those movies above it, is that it doesnt have many tense scenes where you are glued to the screen in awe. Events just kinda happen and you move from scene to scene, albeit very well acted and directed, but nothing sticks in clear memory.
