Not an assassination, not an execution, not dies in battle, just someone dying.
Ogedei, Great Khan of the Mongols. An Earth changer that never gets enough ink. The Mongol armies of Subutai were swatting the best armies like sickly files. There was nothing keeping them from the Atlantic Ocean and subjugating Europe. When Ogedei dies, the Mongols had to go back to Mongolia for the election of a new Khan. They never went back. Could the Mongols ruled Europe forever, probably not. But they ruled Russia for three centuries. Lots can change in a couple centuries.

interesting... On April 9th, 1241, a Mongol army destroyed a Polish Army at Legnitz (and I mean destroyed) On April 11th, 1241, a Mongol Army destroyed a Hungarian army at Mohi (and I mean destroyed)
Two days later. Mohi and Legnitz were 500 km apart. The Mongols were the most devastating army in history. Like Alexander and Napoleon, Genghis Khan's army had amazing subordinate generals. Subutai conquered 35 nations and fought 65 battles, ending 65-0. Jebe might have been the greatest cavalry leader in history. Batu conquered Russia. By invading in winter (take that Hitler and Bonaparte and Charles XII). Hugalu, Kadan, Mukhali. Nothing could have stopped then from wading their horses in the Atlantic.

In that other thread I mentioned Charles XII as being the first major invader of Russia. I'm forgetting about the Mongols. I admit I haven't read much about them, but now you've piqued my interest.

There has been contention if the mongol armies even intended to conquer Western Europe so that might not have been as crucial as you might think. There is also some dispute regarding about how the the mongols would've fared in densely forested regions packed with castles that were common in Western Europe leaving the mongols vulnerable to counter attacks by heavy cavalry. Wiki has this to say: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_invasion_of_Europe#European_tactics_against_Mongols
