Anyone here remember WillEd from IMDb? He was the first guy to help me out with this.
Anyway, I just sent him a message about Kernan on the Monster Kids forum. Of course, there’s nothing definite with Kernan, but as he’s the most likely candidate we’ve found so far, I thought I should let WillEd know.

I heard from an unimpeachable authority that it was "a ghost/phantom/spirit who sang three Cole Porter songs in Sleuth".
Details at 11 !

In the interests of full disclosure, I should let you all know that that YouTube video with the songs has a comment that was posted 4 months ago but that I just saw now by someone who also caught the Sleuth singer bug: he says he also e-mailed Graham Hartstone, but this time Hartstone had a vague memory of Harry Nilsson singing the songs. I looked up videos of Nilsson’s singing Great American Songbook tunes, and I don’t think he sounds anything like our man, but… It’s interesting, and I wish it were the answer right under my nose the whole time, but it doesn’t look that way.

Nalkarj unless he sounds totally different when singing those other songs sadly agree

E-mailed the BBC Big Band Orchestra, which does modern renditions that sound authentically ’30s, and I’m also in contact with the guy who says he got that tip about Nilsson from Hartstone. As always, will chime in if anything comes of it.

I keep haunting the boards over at reddit.com hoping someone will post, "I sang the Cole Porter songs in the SLEUTH movie. Ask Me Anything." I know what my first question would be.

I know what my first question would be. Would it be "Why haven't you joined IMDB-V2 and answered Nalkarj 's question which has been running for the last decade or two ? " ?

That was my second question, the first being, "Who in Hell are you?!"

Nothing big, as usual, unfortunately, but nevertheless:
1. I talked to the guy who posted the YouTube comment. He thinks it’s Nilsson because Hartstone mentioned that name, though he [my correspondent] agrees that Nilsson doesn’t sound anything like our man.
2. Nothing from the BBC Big Band Orchestra.
3. What’s your honest opinion on Kernan as a candidate, everyone? Because, outside us in this thread, no one to whom I’ve proposed Kernan as a candidate thinks he sounds like the Sleuth singer.

Nalkarj fwiw ... Kernan is a good listen to BUT I don't think he is the mystery singer UNLESS they electronically altered his voice to make it sound more Olde Time Recordy.
THERE ~~~~~~ making that statement will Guarantee 100% that's Kernan's our guy !

What if the recording was sped up? There's always a possibility. I also think the reason they would record their own version-especially in the early 70s, was a lack of good quality audio-they didn't want a bunch of crackles in a real old recording. I think this is why they recorded songs for PLAY DIRTY.

Prime etc. but it's the crackles that show it's an old recording ! IF anything, I think they would have added some crackles etc to any new recording.
I just .wav-ed a bunch of 78 rpm oldies and was ( am still) torn as to whether or not to "clean up" the sound because, for me, part of their charm and appeal is the old sound via crackles and pops. So far. I have removed the worst of it that really interferes and intrudes on the music or singer. I have some Caruso and Lawrence Tibbetts that are beyond "repair"

Prime etc. but it's the crackles that show it's an old recording ! IF anything, I think they would have added some crackles etc to any new recording. But it is controlled crackles. In the case of Play Dirty, the songs were supposed to be brand new--1940s, so having record crackles wouldn't make sense anyway. In the case of Sleuth, not so, but they may have felt they needed to control what it sounded like to avoid distractions from the dialogue.

Never saw Play Dirty Prime etc. so dunno. But In Sleuth … the music in question is in scenes with little or no dialogue. One plays while Olivier scarfs down food and waves his hands excessively to the tune
