So while the House Stark prequel (The Long Night) was scrapped, likely due to a weak response to its pilot, the Targaryen prequel has been moved to the next development stage. HBO officially asked for 10 episodes of the show called 'House of the Dragon'. It is created by Ryan Condal (fairly new, mostly known for Colony) and George RR Martin. Miguel Sapochnik is the first director to be attached and he'll direct the pilot as well as multiple other episodes. Recently, for some reason, it feels like it's rare when a new franchise tv/movie project is announced and the people involved actually are great picks. But I think this is one of those rare cases and I can't wait to see the finished product.

HBO deserves no second chance after season 8. I won't watch it. HBO didn't write season 8. HBO is known for giving creative control to the creative people. HBO mostly will only step in when it has to do with budget issues, but otherwise they let the show runners do what they want. HBO giving creative freedom is the reason why they draw the big names (actors, show runners, etc.) to their programming. They've cultivated that reputation over many years now. They weren't going to change that stance just to throw their weight around on the set of GOT. They ultimately were going to let the two guys who adapted their biggest moneymaker, to complete their vision. I highly doubt they wanted to require more seasons only to have fans be upset that they dragged out the show by being greedy...which is ironic since people blame them for ruining the show even though they left D&D to complete what they "started"... While the president of HBO wanted the show to run another 2 seasons (he was very public about his view on the matter), he ultimately left the decision of ending GOT to the show runners. It was D&D who chose to end the show. They were the ones in charge of season 8 as well.
