From what I've read, it was more of a father-daughter relationship. And Vicky was dedicated to restoring the foul reputation of the previous Kings. Bending over for your PM wouldn't exactly accomplish that.

They were very close after the death of Prince Albert. There's no hard evidence of an affair. Some say it was purely platonic, like her friendship with Abdul Karim, the Munshi (famed in the Judi Dench movie). Some say that Vicky and Brown were secretly married. They had adjoining rooms at Balmoral and she took his death as hard as she did Albert's. They also spent a night alone in a small cottage on the grounds of Balmoral and had used subterfuge to arraign and pressure to keep quiet. Prince Albert and Victoria's younger daughters were convinced they were having an affair. The Queen wasn't at dour and tight laced as history paints her, "We are not amused" and all that. People said she was having an affair with the Munshi but she was near 70 when she met Abdul Karim and a relatively young when she met Brown (Albert was still alive).
Did you ever see the movie Victoria and Abdul about the friendship between Vicky and the Munshi? Wasn't bad other than painting Victoria and a 21st Century racial progressive.

She was fanatically devoted to Albert but lesser women have gone to another man after the death of a beloved husband. And, face it, the Hanover/Windsor family isn't known for their sexual discretion.
Always was interested in Victoria. You get the image of the famous Diamond Jubilee picture of her. Aged, dressed in black and looking like someone rammed a pickle up her bum. She was so much more and possible saved the monarchy. The last two before her, George IV and William IV weren't poster boys for fine kingship. Then you had loony George III (he was very popular until he lost his mind) and the first two George's, who were Germans occupying the British throne. Her reign restored the dignity of the throne.

I wasn't saying it was a bad thing at all, merely saying people love to smear the names of historical figures long after they are gone.

No. They were very close, but I am sure nothing improper happened between them. I don't think every relationship has to be a sexual one. Melbourne and the Queen made each other laugh all the time and she probably regarded him as something of a father figure, he was forty years older than her after all.

I asked because it seems as if anytime theres an adaptation of Victorias life the writers change her dynamics with Melbourne. In young Victoria they have a love/hate relationship. In victoria, they seem like kindred spirits and possible lovers, in the duchess they have a father/daughter dynamic basically.

It was basically a father/daughter dynamic as Victoria viewed Lord Melbourne as a father figure, its also important to remember that when the 18 year old Victoria became Queen, Lord Melbourne was in his 50s and not as young as he is portrayed in the show. He was also overweight. They did love each other but not in a romantic way.
