Hello aπd Happy Rugby World Cup Fiπal Day...... UNFORTUNATELY Your boat to Yokohama has beeπ accideπtly hit and suπk by a 汚れた偉大な大きな日本海豚 (Dirty great big Japaπese Sea-Pig.)
Doπ't worry too much.....the crew got to safety..........and Porkimishi, bless her, has just got a grazed sπout.......but YOU have oπly maπaged to get to a little islaπd with palm trees aπd stuff....thus missiπg the Fiπal which the South Africans are leadiπg at half time. FORTUNATELY because the boat suπk slowly .....you had eπough time to choose aπd dowπload 8 (eight) of your most fave soπgs and grab your music tablet thiπgy........--plus 1 (oπe) book aπd 1 (oπe) other 'luxury' item. Blimey it's just like that radio show.
You're goππa be there for about 9 LONG Moπths Oπ your Loπesome !!! .....but will be well sorted for Duracell batteries, cocoπuts, crisps and raw sushi.....and the most violent creature on this beautiful islaπd is a bliπd hedge-slug with πo teeth. And πo pirates probably. Also for good measure, a few dozeπ crates of mid-raπge saki aπd some packets of Seven Star cigarettes aπd a few Bic lighters have beeπ washed ashore. Result !! Weather forecast is fair to middliπg.
Which 8 fave soπgs did you choose & maπage to save to play (and be happy to re-play)......and which book and what 'other' item did you choose to grab for your L0πG stiπt oπ the islaπd ?

Robert Rich & B. Lustmord - “Undulating Terrain” An existential reminder that I’m all alone in the universe and there’s nothing I can do about it. There is a stark beauty to the track too and it just so happens to be my favourite song from one of my all-time favourite albums so that’s a bonus. I guess I like the catharsis of feeling isolated and alone.
Björk - “Unison” Ignoring OP's story, I might be all alone on this hypothetical island but this hopelessly romantic song can help me pretend that isn’t the case. With its lush arrangements and Björk’s gorgeous and expressive vocals, this is just pure love in audio form. The lyrics will also… conjure images… never mind.
Leonard Cohen - “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” While the previous song is all about being in love, here a wonderful albeit very sad song that is about the end of it. It reminds me of a time in my life that has similar characteristics. We all need a good cry now and again and Lenny’s stoic words and voice is the best place for that.
Underworld - “Born Slippy” For those moments when I want to dance, shout, and reminisce about my rebellious teenage years. It's a song that I have listened to probably over a thousand times and I still think is one of the most exciting and energetic pieces of dance music ever created.
Autechre - “Eutow” This is also very danceable and it also reminds me of more care-free times but its approach is much more abstract and alien, with its huge slabs of weird synthetic noises and bass. When I’m stuck on this island I’d occasionally need something a bit weird and esoteric as an escape from reality so it might as well be Ae’s best song.
Coil - “Going Up” A campy yet mournful and utterly beautiful epitaph to not just the album it's on but to the entire band. Its solemn beats and minor key melodies are punctuated with samples of Jhonn Balance's final live performance while the lyrics are a cover to a British sitcom theme tune which can easily double as a metaphor for death. It's a song that will remind me that my demise on this desert island is probable but it's okay to approach it with a wry smile.
Yellow Swans - “Opt Out” It has a huge emotional range, whether it's melancholy or joy, anger or contentment, it's a wonderful slab of sound that brings to you what you bring to it. It is relaxing through its fuzziness and repetition but also intense with its huge amounts of distortion and wailing guitars. It would make a great soundtrack to the end of my days, whether it's passing away peacefully in my sleep or raging against a tsunami that wipes the desert island out to sea. It would even fit in the event of my rescue.
Ludwig Van Beethoven - “Symphony No. 9” Movement IV (Berliner Philharmoniker / Herbert von Karajan) The clichéd classical choice in order to make myself look sophisticated, sure, but it's just magnificent isn't it? Ode to joy is more than just a title, it's an accurate description. I think I'd need something that is incredibly uplifting to keep me going but it's also an important document of mankind's achievements that would give me something to strive for as I'm toiling away.
LUXURY ITEM: Nintendo Switch + The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Not only is Breath of the Wild probably the best video game I have played in my 35 years on this earth, it's also about a lone figure at odds with nature who must use the tools that the landscape provides to survive and grow, so it could teach me a few things about the situation I was in. It's also an enormously long experience with lots of replay value.
BOOK: George R. Stewart - “Earth Abides” It's a novel about the end of civilisation and how a man slowly rebuilds it with an ecological and harmonious message that all things come to an end but that's okay. I think that'd be the most appropriate thing to read and re-read in my situation. It also happens to be probably my all-time favourite piece of fiction.

Robert Rich & B. Lustmord - “Undulating Terrain” and the rest. This is exactly what this sort of exercise from the radio show is about, drifty. Thanks for sharing your choices with your interesting notes. I am familiar with a few and wish to investigate the rest. ...and I hope the partner of ones dreams is hiding in the underbrush ....for not for too long.

Albert Ayler - Truth is Marching In www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyzu--bKJcsI'm a dyed in the wool miserable atheist, so I can imagine I'd be farily happy in solitary confinement on a desert island. However, if I ever felt that there was no point in going on, I'm pretty sure I'd dig this out, play it back to back 400 times, and feel happier about the day. And if I got a tropical disease and was at death's door, it's teh kind of music that could convince me of the existence of God and an afterlife. Paavoharju - Valo tihkuu kaiken läpi www.youtube.com/watch?v=gptt6srqe_YSimilarly spiritual and view-expanding, this could convince me that I may be rescued from isolation by aliens. Just the most beautiful, unique thing ever recorded. Imagine living your life without being able to hear it? Current 93 - All The World Makes Great Blood www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpOsNDT9YwoThere has to be a Current 93 track, doesn't there? I'm not sure this is their best stripped of the context of its album. Or even in the album. But it's another track that gives me hope in mankind. It's just really simple, and really positive. New Order - Temptation www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbXDCjx3NIwYes, it does have to be the 12" version, although it should really be accompanied by all the really early live versions on youtube, too. This song means more to me than any other by means of circumstance, relating to a very close family member's death, and it also makes me think of my wife because of all the times I tell her she's got the cold grey eyes of a killer. I can't really listen to it without tears forming, so it's a bloody silly idea to be doing that in work right now. Phil Ochs - Changes www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8uk8kEz3UMThere's great live footage of an agitated Neil Young covering this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9gyHnWegb4) live at farm aid. I'm not a big fan of Neil's, but I can't disagree with his comment of "one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived". Another simple song which sings of the movement of time with an elegance and sadness that is stunning. "Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else. One last cup of wine we will pour. And I'll kiss you one more time, and leave you on the rolling river shores of changes" SPK - Slogun www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZWmYEUowegWell, you have to be ready to warn off invaders, don't you? At the time of its release, in 1979, it must've been fairly shocking in its violence and extremity. One of those songs that can cut through any kind of fug. I could've smoked a kilo of grass, and this would still make me want to punch a marmoset in the face. Coil - An Unearthly Red www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ0JLobQfvYBecause I haven't packed enough electronic stuff away in my survival kit. Obviously, I'm going to need some serious bass-bins on this island, and it might help loosen a coconut or two (oo-er). Clock DVA - 4 Hours www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sputl2yAbfQI just couldn't imagine not having this with me. It's like the best pop single of the post-punk era, bluesy, jazzy, full of an urban-noir cool, and an out of tune flute. It feels like its always been a part of me. The song, not the flute. **LUXURY ITEM**Guitar, with amp. I can't play, and I wouldn't want to learn to. But I would like to make some noise. **BOOK**Is the dictionary a given? I could genuinely read the full OED pretty much from cover to cover. Short attention span.

I wonder if anyone has ever attempted to film it.
Not a surprising finding out Stephen King is a fan.

Taylor Swift - Shake It Off Surprising pick. I actually bought 1989 the other day. Ridiculously catchy album. Indeed, though I still consider Speak Now her overall best (I'd also probably pick Style over Shake it Off from 1989, personally). If you liked 1989, check out Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion if you haven't; it's similarly a 1980s retro-styled pop album and just as good as 1989, if not a bit better. Carly also nails the 80s sound/vibe even better (it really sounds like that album could've been released in the 80s). Here's a couple tracks: (^ Legit one of my favorite songs of all-time. No idea how this failed to be a hit. I even transcribed the sax part to play it on guitar.) (^ That's from Emotion Side B, but may be my second favorite song from either after Run Away With Me)
