Most of the movie was 8.5/10 for me. I REALLY liked this movie...until they got to the Overlook . At that point the movie (in my opinion) crapped the bed. Other than the hedge maze , I can't say that I really liked anything that happened from that point on. The weak ending brought he movie down to about 7.5/10.

I loved it. Even if it had no connection to The Shining it would have been great.
Not sure what you didn't like about the Overlook (it's in the trailer, no spoiler needed).

13m ow when expected to do 25m+ 🙈 Ok so they overestimated? It happens. I think people also weren’t sure what this was supposed to be. It seemed like a lot of people didn’t know Doctor Sleep was a sequel to the Shining which didn’t help.

I liked it a lot. I loved the Easter eggs. One of which I totally missed until after. The Overlook part was the weakest, for me, and for ME the book was always more about Dan(ny) coming to peace with the thing THROUGH the death of all those folks. That felt glossed over, but... time....

BTW, is Ewan McGregor now typecast as "dude who is haunted by dead heroin babies?" maybe coke babies? this should serve as a good crossover btwn Trainspotting and Shining.
so this movie could have failed miserably as it took some bold, even bad, steps. this includes: - turning it into an action horror - attempting to establish a franchise with good and bad psychic Jedi type people
- black father figure finding out something crazy about himself or his family, needs to quickly come to terms comic relief, ends up dead in the end (see T2)
- gun fight with recovering alcoholics now expert snipers (see latest Girl wtih Dragon Tattoo sequel) - playing off a new alcoholics anonymous theme materialised in the end with his momentous decision not to drink the glass of whiskey
but in the end it worked for me. I wasn't gushing, but i was pleasantly entertained throughout. Ferguson deftly executed a role that could easily have fallen on its face, and which was slightly reminiscent of Clockwork Orange. all the actors were pretty good.
so yeah, it has shamelessly commercialized a long touted kubrick buff classic. i am sure 2001-humpers are turning in their grave, but King was never 100% classy anyways.
i give it a solid 6.85 out of 10, or maybe a 7.235 out of 10. or maybe a 7.5 out of 10 on a good day.

Ending was the weak link no doubt but I still loved this so much more than expecting. Would give an 8/10 I agree about he ending and was thinking - what would have made a better ending? some spoilers here, tags don’t work for me for some reason. Idk, the movie loses steam for me as soon as they reach the overlook. Up to that point, it was genuinely cool and creepy for me. The villains were conceptually freaky with sucking out the shine of kids and I love how it gets revealed that they’re ancient mysterious beings. And when they die, that imagery was so damn awesome. Overlook section felt goofy when compared to the rest of the film—Danny unlocking his boxes and having the ghosts attack Rose the Hat was easily the worst section of the movie. Way too much (poor) CGI was piled onto those characters. I had very few problems up to when Rose’s second hand man gets thrown through the windshield. From there, I just wish they had found a way to defeat the final antagonist that didn’t require going back to the Overlook. Or if it was unavoidable, at least executed better eg keep it Doctor Sleep, not The Shining-lite. It just felt like an entirely separate movie to the first 2/3rds as soon as Flanagan tries to please the Kubrick crowd.

Minor spoilers
Did anyone else find it surprisingly touching when Danny was comforting the elderly man with the shine on his death bed? Easily the best “small” moment of the movie, and the scene to make me realize I was really on board with what Flanagan was doing. A horror movie with a true heart.
