What are your favorite artists per decade? I made a top 3 per decade and made sure to not include any artist twice, even if their work spans many decades. In that case I simply picked the decade that contains my favorite work by them. I expect this to change significantly over time (as happens with everyone's opinion), but also because my main knowledge on music is from the 90s until now and the 60s/early 70s. I have a major gap in music knowledge concerning the 80s and late 70s, which I'm trying to fill in (which is also how I first heard about Talking Heads), but it'll still take many years before I've listened to most of the stuff I want to listen to.
60s: 1. The Beatles 2. The Velvet Underground 3. The Beach Boys
70s: 1. Pink Floyd 2. David Bowie 3. Nick Drake (or Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones, really close race here for #3)
80s (easily the decade where I still have my biggest music blind spots): 1. Talking Heads 2. Kate Bush 3. The Smiths
90s: 1. Björk 2. A Tribe Called Quest 3. Fishmans
00s: 1. Radiohead 2. Arcade Fire 3. The White Stripes
10s: 1. Janelle Monáe 2. Kanye West 3. Joanna Newsom (also really wanted to put Kendrick or Tame Impala in the top 3, but I eventually went with Joanna)

I know you asked for artists per decade. But with my music collection, looking at it by decade doesn't reveal meaningful trends. So I'm going to do this by century. ARTIST | CountOfALBUM | | 20th Century | Judas Priest | 8 | Manowar | 6 | Accept | 5 | Iron Maiden | 5 | Dio | 4 | Savatage | 4 | Slayer | 4 | | 21st Century | Primal Fear | 8 | Iron Savior | 4 | Mystic Prophecy | 3 |

Hey Kevin have you listened to FKA twigs’ new album? As a fan of Kate Bush and Björk you definitely should listen to it if you haven’t.

FKA Twigs
Good album, prefer the first though. Saw her live at a London nightclub and she was excellent. Will definitely be near the top of the year end lists that one.

1000-1200: Anonymous is the greatest. Too bad he never got a proper publishing contract. He said he started making music in the 800s but he was lying.
1190s: Perotin - literally the birth of music worth listening to. Richard the Lionheart wrote a sad song around that time too.
It's going to be a long post. Maybe I'll do centuries instead.
1200: mostly Anonymous again. 1300: the Ars Nova crowd and the Ars Subtilior fringe. Machaut, Landini, Ciconia. 1400: Binchois, Dufay, Ockeghem, Obrecht, Josquin Desprez 1500: Janequin, Palestrina, Lasso, Gesualdo 1600: Sweelinck, Monteverdi, Gaultier, Froberger, Louis Couperin, Legrenzi, Biber, Purcell, Corelli 1700-1750: François Couperin, Heinichen, Vivaldi, JS Bach, Weiss, Telemann 1750-1800: CPE Bach, J. Haydn, WA Mozart, Boccherini, Vanhal, Kozeluch 1800-1850: Beethoven, Schubert, Spohr, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann 1850-1900: Liszt, Raff, Bruckner, Brahms, Dvorak 1900-1950: Magnard, Debussy, Sciabin, Nielsen, Franz Schmidt, Sibelius, Bartok, Schönberg, Webern, Bax, Prokofiev 1950 onwards: Boulez, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Xenakis, Scelsi, Lutoslawki, Penderecki, Simpson, Dutilleux, Rautavaara, Schnittke, Rihm. Saariaho
Pop junk I like: 1960s: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cream, Hendrix, Pink Floyd (67-71) 1970s: King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Magma, Klaus Schulze, Pat Metheny, Weather Report 1980s: Yngwie Malmsteen, Metallica, Blackfoot, Celtic Frost 1990s: King Crimson (again), Steve Vai, Overkill.
I'm sure stuff has happened in the last 25 years (like Guthrie Govan)…
