So I think it's a cool idea. I like that they've jumped ahead.
But instead of telling the new stories and letting us figure things out, all they've done so far is show "flashbacks" from what happened after Friday's episode.
I'm not sure I like that...seems like they are missing an opportunity for some creative storytelling.
I have to say though, I love having Abigail, JJ, Jack and Jennifer all on together, so nice to see that family unit again.

Jack's parts were good, it started out okay - arguably not as good as they could have been, but that's entirely how the scene was written; and Matt Ashford really made what they gave him as good as it possibly could be.
The rest is pretty much what I was expecting, lots of dumb exposition and flashback. I mean, Christ, how often does someone actually say "oh, such and such thing happened one year ago"?
I'm barely 20 minutes in, but I had to come and comment on the absolutely asinine stupidity of them actually trying to pass Xander off as the father of Sarah's baby. It seemed so obvious the way they kept teasing it out and making it seem like all the cards were on the table and Eric knew he was the father, right up to the last second - and I'll give them some credit for finessing it better than some other fake outs, but I questioned it the whole time and the moment she mentioned her going to "daddy" that it wasn't going to be Eric. And sure enough, Xander apparently apparated from wherever Nicole's office is and materialize in the Kiriakis living room....
I mean, why the hell would they bother with that sort of subterfuge once the pregnancy out? What's the point? What possibly motivation does Sarah have in this? We know what Nicole's motivation was, but come on.

Aaaaaaugh, this episode is so fucking bad. Who just sit around and talks in exposition about things that happened to them like this? And of course they went to the "Titan lab," because a) Titan has a lab for some reason, equipped to do paternity test; and b) nothing says completely reliably and definitely not corruptible like a private lab owned by one of the prospective father's family....  |

"A fake paternity test? How did you pull this off?" Seriously??? The real question should be how anyone trusts a paternity test in Salem. Also, why the hell did Xander bother telling Nicole he faked the paternity test? She may have had suspicions without being told, but she probably wouldn't have pull too hard on any loose threads there. What's funny is how, with the popularization of mail order DNA testing, it might have been more secure to ship off the samples and get the results that way, with ostensibly a lower risk of tampering. Just in general, this just continues to support my premise that in a lot of these cases "the lie is better" - meaning that whatever lie the characters are telling, it should have actually been the truth. Does Xander deserve to be the father of Sarah's baby? Probably not, especially not more than Eric, but arguably the fact that he deserves it less makes him actually being the father more interesting. So I'm guessing Eve is the one everyone believes pushed Jennifer, which is why we saw her in jail in the preview Am I the only one who, when they hear, "That's what they all say," they immediately think, "They all say, 'd'oh"? |

I'm liking it. It's really interesting to see where the characters are one year later and how they got to be there.
I really like that the hospital seems to have gotten a remodel during the year.

It is iconic, but it also sometimes feels like it's so big and pervasive that sometimes they just have scenes set there that don't have to be, just to use it. I wouldn't mind them paring down how many people are in the hospital at any given time, so this might help. Police station, yeah, I miss. Particularly I miss how they got rid of the commissioner's office, so people are always taking meetings in the interrogation room and stuff. I'm thrilled that they seem to have gotten rid of the DiMera mansion. I'm sick of that set and how overused it's been. I really don't like the modern concept of the DiMeras as a corporate family running a business which was never what the deal was. Was 90s Stefano supposed to be... sitting on conference calls and looking over spreadsheets? They were just a mysterious exotic family of supervillains. They're not the Kiriakises. I think this show could use a DiMera break, frankly. Stefano's gone (or... at least he should be with Joe gone), it's time to let it go. And stop with the Stefans and the Andres and faux-Kristens to try to weakly keep it going.

Looks like Stefani or Stefano is being painted by Hope/Gina. Seems like they are intent on reviving the DiMeras.
Man Gabi is awful. I’m done. She can leave now. She’s not even a good evil. It makes no sense why any man would be into her. She’s rude and belligerent!

This whole thing could have been done better if it was Jack or Julie or someone catching up Jennifer on everything that has happened while she was in the coma...instead of these stupid flashbacks or the characters talking about things that happened a year ago in such blow by blow detail.

As usual, it lacks subtlety or nuance. Just blunt exposition. Like today's episode, Justin and Kayla talk about how they ended up together after Adrienne died; and they just casually say how they'd have dinner frequently, Justin coming up with excuses to run into her. Then showed the day they gave into their feelings, the day Kayla moved into her new condo and Justin helped with a plumbing issue (no pun intended). I can't help contrast that against, say, This is Us, or A Million Little Things, where they bother taking the effort of connecting the dots and showing why these moments have value in the development of the people's relationships and why we should care.
And then there was thinly veiled dig at audience criticism, with Justin and Kayla commenting how people are quick to judge couples on reality shows they watch and their hope that people wouldn't be quick to judge them or some such bullshit. You know, real subtle.

Also, and this is just speculation I'd bet serious money that Brady's baby didn't die and is, in fact, Mackenzie. I bet it's actually Saric's baby who died and this is what Xander and Victor teamed up to do - switch the babies. Xander, to spare Sarah pain and so he doesn't lose his connection to her; Victor, to eliminate Brady being eternally connected to Kristen.

On the one hand, Eric's being a massive dick all the way around, even if there is some justifications, but on the other, I do like that he's finally a dad. But at the same time, I kind of wouldn't mind Xander turning out to legitimately be Mickey's father; just because that would be an interesting twist on the falsified paternity tests, having it turn out to be the truth after all. Overall though, the idea of Brady having another kid, much less with Kristen, doesn't thrill me as much.

Brady's kid is essentially null and void with Theresa off the canvas. I still like Theresa with Brady best. I wish she'd come back. Oh well.
I agree Eric is being a jerk, and I can't stand that he has any ties to Sarah, she's the worst.
I like her with Xander, and I actually really like Xander and agree it would be good if the baby was actually his. But the only other person who could be the dad would be Rex right? She didn't sleep with Xander anywhere near the time of Mickey's conception.
Speaking of Mickey, instead of calling her Mackenzie, why didn't they just call her Michaela? That's easier to justify the stupid Mickey nickname than Mackenzie.
