Foreigner are a top-selling rock band I know very little music by. Off the top of my head, I can name just one song, 'I Want To Know What Love Is'.
What are some of your favourite Foreigner records?
Thanks.

Foreigner had a no shortage of massive hits, many of which are way overplayed on classic rock stations. To name a few: Cold as Ice, Head Games, Urgent, Juke Box Hero, Waiting for a Girl Like You, Hot Blooded, Feels Like the First Time, Double Vision...the list goes on. My favorite song? Hmm. I'm going to say Girl on the Moon with Fool for You Anyway and Reaction to Action not far behind. Honorable mentions: Headknocker and That Was Yesterday.

Even though they're a major group, I was surprised seeing their sales figures on wikipedia suggest they're among the big boys. I thought of them because I saw a documentary recently in which Mick Jones talked about Mark Ronson.
Thanks for the hit list - among them, I definitely remember 'Cold As Ice', so that's at least 2 songs I know well.
I'll queue up some of those tracks, including the favourites you mention; I figure there's bound to be some action on youtube.

I'd say they have a rightful place among the big boys. It's always cool to see someone discover new music (to them, anyway) they like. Happy Foreignering.

Saw them in 1985 and they put on a good show. I'm only familiar with the first five albums. And I tend to be more interested in their songs that rock than the ones chosen for radio consumption. Some of my favs.
Headknocker - from Foreigner (first album) Dirty White Boy - from Head Games Urgent - from 4 Tooth and Nail - from Agent Provocateur Reaction to Action - from Agent Provocateur Stranger in My Own House - from Agent Provocateur

Just admit it, Sulla: Your favorite Foreigner song is Say You Will. This was released earlier this year: www.discogs.com/Foreigner-Live-At-The-Rainbow-78/release/13353928It's pretty good. The 12-minute version of Starrider is worth the price of admission.

I just listened to some of those on YouTube. I sorta forgot about Starrider and Long, Long Way From Home.

I like this song 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' I'm listening to at the moment, great bassline. If it's on the soundtrack to 'Rock Of Ages', I have that Tom Cruise movie on dvd.

Never one of the first bands I think of, but Urgent and Hot Blooded are at least good enough not to change the station on.

'I Want To Know What Love Is'. at the pool i went to as a youth, the life guard would blare that on his little boom box in some maudlin attempt to seduce the female babe lifeguard.

Other than "I Want to Know What Love Is," I disliked them. But now they seem like basic, generic rock. I hear Cold as Ice and Hot Blooded a lot, and Double Vision, but they just go by.

Foreigner is one of those bands that wrote a handful of really good/popular songs but made absolutely no impact on later music, essentially sounding like just another 70s AOR mainstream rock band. That helps explain both their relative obscurity today, but also why they sold a shit-ton of records at the time. I think even from that era I prefer, say, Boston or Journey. Hell, I'd even say Toto were better at that pop-rock hybrid and had a more unique, identifiable sound and style.

LOVE the song "Urgent". I even downloaded a live version of the song off iTunes. Of course, I love the song "I Want To Know What Love Is". Off of "Inside Information", I love the song "Say You Will".
"4" is/was a good album, too. I have it on vinyl.
Another funny thing about Foreigner:
I saw a T-Shirt at Walmart with a picture of the cover of "Agent Provocateur" on it. Of course, anything to do with 80s music...I'm there. So, I bought it.
I wore it to bowling one night. I did have a few comments about it.
The next week, a guy told me that after bowling, he played Grand Theft Auto....and a Foreigner song played.

As pop-rock craftsman they were nearly unparalleled in that era (I guess I'd put XTC ahead of them, but that's a very different sound).

It never ceases to amaze me how many times I stumble across Toto members listed as playing sessions on great records. As you say, tremendous craftsmen in the studio - and in a great band to boot.

Toto was a great band, but their musicianship is often overlooked or ignored.
