Dunkirk (2017) Christopher Nolan (“Interstellar,” “Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy) is directing “Dunkirk” from his own original screenplay, utilizing a mixture of IMAX and 65mm film to bring the story to the screen. The production was filmed in France, Netherlands, the U.K. and Los Angeles. “Dunkirk” opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. “Dunkirk” features a prestigious cast, including Tom Hardy (“The Revenant,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Inception”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” “Wolf Hall”), Kenneth Branagh (“My Week with Marilyn,” “Hamlet,” “Henry V”) and Cillian Murphy (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy), as well as newcomer Fionn Whitehead. The ensemble cast also includes Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan and Tom Glynn-Carney. The film is being produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas (“Interstellar,” “Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy). Jake Myers (“The Revenant,” “Interstellar,” “Jack Reacher”) is serving as executive producer. The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema (“Interstellar,” “Spectre,” “The Fighter”), production designer Nathan Crowley (“Interstellar,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy), editor Lee Smith (“The Dark Knight” Trilogy, “Elysium”), costume designer Jeffrey Kurland (“Inception,” “Bullets Over Broadway”), and visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson (“Mad Max: Fury Road”). Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing “Dunkirk” worldwide and has slated the film for a July 21, 2017 release. I do hope this movie stays with facts as far as is possible. Many recent supposedly factual war movies especially those coming from Hollywood have blatantly ignored fact for "artistic licence" and sensationalism. I realise that box-office receipts are all important, but sometimes the truth is more exciting than fiction.
I have a particular interest in this movie as my father-in-law was 'jerry-dodging' while the evacuation was ongoing. He never did make it to the beaches at Dunkirk. He and a few of his mates were later picked up by submarine, which was patrolling listening for radio messages from stragglers. He was lucky.

I'm hoping to make this my first IMAX film if it's offered that way in my area.

Well from the trailer , it looks like most of the film will be at Dunkirk , which is a pity . Because it should start with Hitler signing of the Operation to the SS Panzer Army , the disintegration of the French Army Resistance , then the pushing of the Allied Forces back through Belgium and Northern France . But I'm also a Fan of Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance , and it will be good to see them in this ! And we also get see Harry Styles from One Direction squirming around in the sand ! I also had the chance to talk to a veteran of Dunkirk many many years ago .

I shudder to to think about "Pearl Harbor" or "Red Tails"......I sincerely hope that Nolan keeps this on the straight and true historical trail and not veer off , etc. I am actually more stoked to see "Pegasus Bridge"

Agreed, if the film starts at Dunkirk, there isn't proper context for the subject matter. The audience needs to understand how it came to that and exactly what was at stake.

Thanks for agreeing Rey , but I'm sure Chris Nolan will give us an astounding thoughtful Epic in Dunkirk ! Just the other day , thoughts on the Dunkirk Conflict came to the fore , which started the digging again about it online . The initial situation was , that after the Poland invasion , the Allies declared war on Germany . The Germans at that stage weren't ready for a full confrontation , lacking equipment and supplies , with the Allies being fully prepared for battle . It's a long story with much intrigue amongst the German Generals , about how they came about their strategy to defeat the rapidly preparing Allied Force . To start with , the Germans attacked Holland for more supplies and to stop them helping the Allies , then attacked Belgium and France .
But back to Dunkirk , which really began with the invasion of Belgium and France . The Germans worked at separating the Allied Armies , which confused them , and eventually defeated them . The last move was driving the remnants back into a pocket (Dunkirk Pocket) . So there are really 4 main phases of this campaign - 1. the German organisation of their attack 2. the confusion of the attack driving the Allies into a pocket 3. the desperate purgatory of Dunkirk (the Movie!) 4. the organisation of the naval retreat of the remaining Allied Forces by Britain (maybe the Movie!) And possibly a 5th point - what went wrong ?!!

There was no SS Panzer Army in 1940. You may be thinking of a different Ardennes Offensive 4.5 years later.

The trailer looks pretty, but the movie looks boring. It's like a Prometheus or Alien: Covenant trailer.

Actually, "from the trailer" it looks likes a standard summer action movie that happens to be set during WWII but that won't mean much. I could be anywhere. All the trailer showed us was action movie tropes. People running, yelling. A lot of shooting. Diving for cover. Explosions. I have absolutely no hope at all for this film. I may see it if it gets a nom for Best Picture next year otherwise, also considering the sheer number of films already made that picture the Dunkirk rescue, I'm going to have important appointments whenever this movie is playing.

I'm not saying that the movie will be great and you're going to be wrong, but the fact that you're writing off a movie based on one trailer and a teaser is pretty ignorant. Not to mention the fact that one of the best modern-day directors is behind it and has bunched together an incredible cast. Also, why see a movie only if it is nominated for Best Picure? Oscar bait has always been something Nolan could've fallen into, yet he never has. Give these few creative directors left in Hollywood a chance.

I am a massive fan of War Movies but I have to say I'm not sold by the trailers we've seen so far. Nolan is a fantastic director for sure, Memento and Inception were fantastic but I'm not convinced by what I've seen so far. Will definitely see it though and hopefully it's as good as some of his other work.
