Godard for me. Truffaut is more charming, but I can't go past Godard's invention, ambition and attitude. Of course I could always chose Rivette and get the best of both.

Francois Truffaut - "Jules and Jim" is probably the loveliest film I have ever seen.

Francois Truffaut - "Jules and Jim" is probably the loveliest film I have ever seen. My second favorite of his after The Bride Wore Black. You know, in no way am I trying to be contrary here but "The Bride Wore Black" is the only Truffaut film that I did not care for all that much. I thought the plot itself was just not in allignment with Truffaut's gifts. Moreau was at home with the black widow spider role, but it just felt like Truffaut was wanting to do something different and it did not quite gel. "Jules and Jim", on the other hand, was Truffaut's destiny. He was born to make that movie. It's lightness of charm is near devastating, and I mean that in the good way.

Definitely one of his least Truffaut-esque. I enjoyed the singularity of it.

I'm going with Godard here. I enjoy Truffaut well enough, but even when Godard is bad he's at least trying things I have never seen another director really do before. And when Godard is good, he's pushing the medium forward and doing so hard.
