I love the classics, but I never understood the love for the original. Once you learn that it was all set up by price’s character it’s not scary anymore. It’s not a bad movie, but I just am not a fan of it.
Now the remake on the other hand. The remake is one of those remakes that improves TONS on the original. The remake was actually pretty scary and tense most of the time. The characters are fun to watch for the most part and I really enjoyed Geoffrey’s Vincent price impersonation. The setting of an asylum was also very smart!!! Those places are just creepy in general.
It’s a shame that the remake doesen’t get the attention it deserves. I love it!!! Which version is your favorite and why?

Haven't seen it in a while, but never had any affection for the remake. Sure, Geoffery Rush does a good job embodying the Vincent Pricey essence of it all, but no other characters did anything for me at all. As much as I liked some of those actors in other things, there's not one other performance in this thing that I worked.
As much there's a level of style and everything to them, that rash of 'Dark Castle' horror movies were more obnoxious than they were entertaining. And some of those were 'updated' remake, like this one, that just tried to be slick and 'modern' versions of the same old thing. I get it, but they reeeeaaallly don't age well. They feel very much of the music video era that they are from. They have their moments but they look and feel of them is such a lame early 2000s cliche. For instance, I fucking despised Thirteen Ghosts because it was so aggressively shitty in that style. I think Ghost Ship might be the best of them, and that's certainly damning with the absolute faintest of praise.

I like the original Vincent Price movie better. It's definitely not a scary movie, and it's pretty campy. But it's so much fun which might had been what William Castle wanted. The '99 remake is kind of dumbed down. But the opening scene is amazing and some of the kills are entertaining. I think it's more fun with watch as a group viewing like for Halloween.

I actually just watched the original for the October Challenge. Now that I've seen both I would say I prefer the original. The remake was ok but souless to me.

Put me down for the remake, actually. You got Rush, Famke, and Kattan all hamming their asses off, Marilyn Manson's awesome Sweet Dreams cover, and a few fairly creepy moments (the scene where Bridgette Nielson's camera reflects the ghosts but she can't see them stands out as one).

They both have their good and bad points.
I'm calling it a draw.

The scene after the credits was pretty disturbing.

I don't think I have seen the 1999 version. If I did it left no impression. Strange, I thought Catherine Zeta-Jones was in it. Famke Janssen eh? I am sure I would have remembered it.
The original isn't particularly good though as Price or Castle movies go.
The best anecdote I heard about it was Price said he liked to sneak into movie theaters and creep behind people, "preferably two young girls," and after a spooky moment he would thrust his head between them and say: "wasn't that scary?" I think people had to have been made of sterner stuff not to get a heart attack from that.

Two totally different movies though. Also in my opinion most Castle movies weren’t. They were always very poorly made I thought. The only thing they had going for them at the time was Vincent Price.

I honestly didn’t have a problem with the remake. The ending was really cartoony though, almost something you’d see in something like Luigi’s Mansion or something.

Speaking of castle films, remember when Dark Castle was gonna remake the Tingler? What do you think that would have been like that?

Big fan of the original. As a young kid (I'm 66 years old, mind you), it scared the hell out of me. Yeah, watching it now it's campy, typical Castle flick, but I have a lot of love for it.
The remake was terrible and I hated every long, arduous minute of it.

I never found either one scary but the original. The remake is not bad until the ending which goes completely off the rails into schlock.

Always gotta go with the original, I grew up on it and watched it until the tape died. I loved it, and it was a very creepy movie, creepy atmosphere, creepy music, creepy looking house...but I don't actually remember it scaring me as a kid. The Bat, also in 1959 with Vincent Price, that one gave me nightmares for many years.
I've had a love/hate relationship with the remake, when we heard a remake was coming out, I was stoked, I was 10 when we rented it, that opening scene in the operating room, that f**ked me up and I couldn't watch it again until I was in my 20s. And NOW you watch it, and it really pales with the stuff you see on CSI and the Chicago shows, doesn't it?
Watching it again now all these years later, I've come to love it. A lot of stuff if you actually think about it, doesn't make sense, but it's a pretty decent update on the story.
