Yes, I know that there's another thread on this subject, but, frankly, I can't find it, and I have a question.
In the climactic courtroom scene where Mason uncovers the real killer, many times it turned out to be an accident or self-defense. I wonder if Burger later considers this before demanding the gas chamber. I also wonder if the real killer has any qualms of conscience about allowing an innocent person to be accused of murder. There is also other possibilities, such as the real killer may have to face Mob vengeance, or the wrath of kinfolk. Of course, these reasons would never factor into the uber-simple plot lines of this series. Later TV shows, which were not under strict censorship control, did delve into these issues.
Capital punishment was eliminated in California many years ago. Too bad; IMO, Manson should have gotten the gas chamber! I'm not sure, but I believe that anti-execution protests escalated after the death of Ted Bundy, and that may have ultimately led to the abolishment of capital punishment in California.
I also wonder if Hamilton Burger ever saw I WANT TO LIVE, starring Susan Hayward in her Oscar winning performance. Personally, I don't like this movie, especially Barbara Graham's constantly screeching brat!

What happened to Topo Gigio? Did he throw you over for Ed Sullivan?
