Didn't know this was even a thing happening.
TEXT:
The legal battle over the Friday the 13th franchise might be coming to an end next June. The first Friday the 13th was released back in 1980, which was the start of a long-running slasher franchise. In the '80s, a new Friday the 13th movie came out nearly every year, but things have been a bit slower lately because of a legal battle between two crucial men in the development of the original film.
Paramount Pictures owned the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise up until they sold the IP to New Line Cinema after the poor reception of Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Things didn't go much better for New Line, but they were able to work with the original film's director, Sean S. Cunningham, to make Freddy vs. Jason in 2003. Several years later, after the reboot in 2009, Cunningham and writer Victor Miller began a legal dispute on who actually owned the copyright to the series. A judge had ruled in favor of Miller when it came to the rights of the original movie; however, Cunningham appealed the court's decision, making the future of the franchise unknown. Now it looks like the lengthy legal battle may finally be coming to an end.
Lawyer Larry Zerner (hat tip Screen Geek) recently posted on Twitter, giving fans an update on the legal dispute. According to Zerner, "The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals has proposed oral arguments for the week of February 10th, 2020. This means there will probably be a decision by June 2020." Zerner is not only a copyright lawyer, but he was also the star of Friday the 13th: Part III. Zerner's tweet can be read below:

I want my Friday the 13th part 13! Yeah.. it's crazy that they never made it that far. How do you even do that at this point? Do we count Freddy vs Jason? Jason X is in the future, so we do call it part 11 and jump back in the timeline? You disregard the remake, right?

Spiritually I wouldn't call the 13th film part 13 as it has not been one continous story. That said if a F13th movie came out and marketed itself as F13th part 13 I would be handing over cash in my teeth to see just for the legacy moment. What I would love is for a part 13 to be similar to internet treatments I've read where all the past survivors of Jason in normal 80's to present day ( Ginny from 2; Chris from part 3; Tommy and Trish from 4; Megan from part 6; Tina and Nick from part 7; Rennie and Sean from part 8) all appear in a final showdown with Jason. In my hopes Ginny and Tommy would be survivors again.

Yea...i knew about it because at one point the F13 video game wasn't allowed to add new content...or wasn't sure if it would retain the profits if it did, so it chose not to.

Horror fans could soon hear news of a new installment in the iconic Friday the 13th franchise, according to producer Roy Lee. In a conversation with Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast, Lee hinted at some imminent announcements regarding a new adventure for the hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding Jason Voorhees. “That one is something that I would love to talk about. You may be hearing something by year’s end… on that front.” movieweb.com/friday-the-13th-reboot-announcement-teased-by-producer-amid-ongoing-legal-battle/

^ I'm so jaded and cynical... I'll believe it when I see it!! One of the supposed scripts they were to use sounded awful. Hoping they come up with something good. It's an effing Jason movie. It's not high brow cinema. It doesn't need a new twist. (Ala "Jason goes to Hell") Just keep it basic. They'll probably just reboot it and focus on his Mom and the events leading up to his drowning.

Per JoBlo, some horror fans have noticed a very interesting comment left by Cunningham on his Cameo page. In his "About" section, it is written, "Sean S. Cunningham directed and produced the seminal horror film Friday 13th, creating the iconic villain Jason Voorhees. The movie has spawned 12 installments with a 13th scheduled for next year."
